I always think of it as a dog knowing three languages.
1) His "Canine Sign Language" (body gestures and postures, stares, ear/tail movements, nose-licking, yawning, etc)
2) His "Canine Verbal Langauge" (barks, moans, groans, whines, and other sounds)
3) the language his handler speaks to him (responds to commands, tone of voice, directions, handler's body gestures, eyes)
