My Great Dane/ Newfie mix went to bed last night with a small swelling one her face and I figured it is just a bug bite. Well this morning I woke up and her face is swollen and covered in lumps and she refuses to eat. The swelling to me is all over her face but it is mostly under her chin. Even her ears are swollen and painful. I've called my vet and he said that he can fit me in a week from now even though I stressed that she needs help NOW not later. Is there anything I can give her at home that will make the swelling go down?

Sounds like maybe a bee sting. Benedryl should help take the swelling down, but if not, that dog needs to see a vet way before a week from now, I would see if another vet could take you.

i agree with Chaos. It's possible that swelling can shut down an airway (though you probably would have seen this by now), So seeing a vet would be important sooner rather than later.

Also if you don't mind taking a picture of him, and posting a link to it, I might be able to tell you what it is. I have had my fair share of dogs stung by bees, so I know the symptoms. Also can you find any small red pin point spot on him? Or is the swelling to much to see? Usually with bee stings you can find the point where they were stung, or at least I can. Also are the swelled areas reddish at all?

I agree if his throat was going to swell it would have already swelled up by now.

My dog is so fluffy that i can not really see anything that shows she has been bitten except the swelling on her on side and the bumps on the top of her head but I did give her some benydryl. It is slowly going down and she seems to be a little bit happier.

This is a good site for dosages of OTC's for dogs,

http://www.walkervalleyvet.com/otc-meds.htm

I know it doesn't have dosages for dogs over 50lbs for benadryl, but I don't think I would give more than two at a time.

Well I wound up finding an emergency vet clinic an hour and a half drive from my home. They want to keep her for a few days as the swelling was even worse this morning. But thank you all for your help.
