Hello,
We adopted a five year old Great Pyrenees Mastiff cross a little over a week ago, who is just learning that it is ok to pee in the yard. Razzy has gone in the yard 4 times and I'm ecstatic everytime, but he will not poop in the yard. He only goes when I walk him, which is what he is used to as he was a shelter dog for a little over 2 months, and abandoned and living outside before he was rescued. He has not evacuated in the house and will go to the door to be let out.
I have taken him for 10 minute walks to get his gut going and take him right into the yard to relieve himself (he peed this morning), and as a reward I praised him, gave him "special" potty treats, and took him out for another walk.
During the second walk he stopped to poop on the sidewalk so I stopped him and RAN home and right into the yard and he wouldn't to go, and I know he has to go.
We have tried picking up his poop from a walk and placing it in the yard so that he knows it's ok to poop there. We have tried the "no poop/pee, no walk" rule but he will wait a whole 9 hours before he reluctantly relieves himself in the yard. He has only relieve himself in the yard a couple times - the first time because he had bad diarrhea from stress and the second when he pooped in the back yesterday morning and that was after waiting an hour with him outside - We cannot do this every day, particulary in the winter because we get very, very cold.
We want to be able to walk him for the sake of walking him, as opposed to walking him to poop. I know we have not had him that long but it sure it a long and probably painful time for him to wait. I try not to stress about it so he doesn't get stressed but it's awfully uncomfortable for him I'm sure!
Any ideas/insight would be greatly appreciated??
