Dog wont eat

I just got this dog a week or so ago. He wont eat dog food I have tried everything, gravy, chicken broth, bacon grease. The previous owners abandoned him. Left him in a crate for three days before anyone found him.

I am at wits end all he wants is people food. We didnt give him any people food at all for two days, no luck he wont eat his food. I have tried putting can food in with the dry food. No luck.

Any ideas. he is a stubborn dog and i dont want him to starve. He needs some weight.

Try melting some butter and pour that on the dry or a sprinkle of parmesan cheese might work as well.

Also feed him when you sit down to eat and mix in whatever your having for lunch/supper with his dog food. In a pack dogs usually eat at the same time.

As long as he still has an appetite I wouldn't worry.
If I had a dog that I knew was healthy but absolutely would not eat and was too thin for my comfort, there are 3 things I would do.

1. Make some Satin Balls and give him a few (how big is he? How much should he weigh?) for each meal.

2 lb Hamburger (High fat, raw)
2 cup of his kibble
2 Egg
2 oz Wheat Germ
2 oz Molasses (not syrup)

Mix together and roll into 1 inch balls. Refrigerate of freeze. Thaw as needed.

2. After a few days to a week of the Satin Balls for meals, after he has gained weight, I would get a high quality canned dog food. Offer a little mixture of 1/4 kibble mixed with 3/4 canned dog food at meal time. **Leave it in the bowl for 15 minutes. If the dog doesn't eat, pick it up and cover it. Put it in the frig till next mealtime. Keep doing this until he eats it. He can afford to get hungry now, so let him. If he's healthy, he won't let himself starve when there's perfectly good food in front of him. After a few days on this mix, mix in more kibble. So now his meal is 1/2 canned and 1/2 kibble. After a few days, up the kibble ratio to 3/4. Keep doing this until he's eating full kibble.

If at any time, he refuses his food, go back to the ** in the step above with the current mixture.

3. No more people food! No treats. None. Until he's eating regularly again and eating only kibble, he gets NO other food.

Well... 4 things. Don't worry over him. Be very disciplined about this. It's for his own good. :)

Thats a good idea with the parmesan cheese. Mabe that will work. ty

If I had a dog that I knew was healthy but absolutely would not eat and was too thin for my comfort, there are 3 things I would do. He is a big dog around fifty pounds or so he is not even a year old yet.

Thank you Oh i agree the no people food thats for sure. I will try this too, he is such a good dog. I want him to stay healthy.

Then I'd give him 2-3 1" Satin Balls 3 times a day. You may want to double the recipe. :) Your dog may get loose stools because of the fat content, so if he'll eat some canned dog food and 3 to 4 Tablespoons of canned pumpkin (NOT pie filling) a day during this time, that would help. I'd also offer some high-quality plain yogurt (2-3 Tablespoons a day). This "Satin Ball diet" shouldn't last longer than a week before going on to the next step.
The first thing I would do is get this dog to a vet for a thorough exam. All kinds of things like parasites or problems with teeth can cause a dog to refuse eating. Only after you get a clean bill of health would I chalk this up to a behavioral issue.
My dog doesnt like dry dogfood.
But now i always put water over his food, and he eats it like a horse!
Have you tryed that?

Dogs eat with there nose (they eat what smell's good, not what tastes good) so if your dog is healthy then it would be enough to but maybe chicken in realy small peaces all over the food, just as small peaces as you can make (dont have to use chicken, just something that he likes realy good) :)

Excuse my bad English, im not american so i dont write english perfect:p
