hi everyone. i got a puppy (8weeks old) 5 days ago. she was going to her crate without a problem (and staying there with the door closed). she was sick however, adn it was possibly the reason she was so good in the crate. now she whines extremely loudly when put in there. i've put food, toys, bed, water, but it's not helping. the whining is getting longer, stronger, and she's now barking incessantly.

i don't mind the yelping and whining, really, except i live in manhattan with very thin walls, and i'm completely sure i'm disturbing the neighbors - and it's completely unfair for them.

i've started to throw in treats, then when she goes in, i throw in more, then when she's done i throw in more (with the door open). but she's going in, taking a couple treats, and bringing them outside to eat. i then play with her for about an hour (minimum) and when she gets tired and lies down, i pick her up and put her in the crate... then i close the door, she yelps, and when she lies down to sleep, i open it... and she stays in.

i will be taking her back to the shelter tomorrow unless someone can PLEASE PLEASE give me some direction. i'm already in love with her, but i simply can't have her whining like this. thanks so much!!! can someone please check my procedure, and advice?

Have you picked up any dog training magazines? There was one good article about crate training your puppy in 5 days.

Your doing everything right putting her in there to sleep treats ect she just needs time. Maybe try walking her for a bit then right to the crate? Does she sleep there at night too? Maybe try having the door closed more often. Try a kong as well filled with treats.

She might just need more time to get used to it, everything is still really new to her. You the new house the crate everything.

Hope you don't have to take her to the pound.
