My first dog had kidney disease. Kidney dogs lose appetite for things because they get a stomach ache after eating but they will eat new foods that haven't ever given them a tummy ache. They then won't eat the new food because they still got a tummy ache. So it does happen.
Try mixing the healthy dog food with some of the healthy table scraps along with some water or low sodium broth to see if he will eat the doctored up food. I'd hand feed if he likes the extra attention. Senior dogs are the best and worth spoiling.
