My dog got spayed 2 weeks ago and yesterday i went to the vet to take the staple off. When my vet took the staples out i was expecting him to clean the wound as well, but it was so crowded yesterday he couldn't do so. All he did was telll me to keep the cone on for an extra day. Well i did keep the cone on an extra day, and i recently just took it off. I noticed she's licking her wound to clean the dry blood off. Should i put the cone back on? or clean it off for her? If i do clean it off for her should i get a warm cloth and gently wipe it or should i use a baby wipe instead? thanks for the answers [:

Use a washcloth wetted with warm water and a little soap/shampoo. I wouldn't worry about it really. It's most likely healed enough that even licking won't hurt it.

what they said above also you can apply a triple antibiotic ointment and if she is really continually going at it licking you can put the cone back on for another day it wont hurt anything. dogs that are lickers sometimes need to have a deterrent, a severe licker can turn a normal spot of skin into a mess in a few hours. so if she wants to keep licking it you may need to put the cone on again. it probably itches.
