We crate trained our puppy from day 1 and she 99% of the time is fine sleeping in her crate. She has had occasional nights where she fusses and we have both waited her out till she quiets down or we bring her into our bed for the night and normally the next night she's fine with sleeping in her crate again. She just got spayed on Thursday (today is Monday). Thursday night she slept great, obviously (anesthesia). Friday night she was okay until around 1am when she started crying and still being very jumpy about her condition we ran to her to check on her and I ended up sleeping with her on the couch. Saturday night she immediately started barking/crying when she went to bed for the night and we didn't want to have to put up with it so we brought her into bed with us. Last night I determined based on how she was the rest of the day that she was fine and there was no need for her to be in bed with us so we went to bed armed with earplugs. She barked consistently off and on from her normal bedtime of 9:30/10:00 (we're early risers) until 3:30 a.m. I was pretty much wide awake between that and other things and so I waited for a break in the squawking and went and let her out. Took her outside, tried to keep her occupied but she clearly did not want me, she wanted my husband and wanted in our bed. Finally gave up and took her in there and she happily snuggled in and fell right asleep.
So...is this just post-surgery clingyness; she's not feeling well and so she wants us and she'll be fine once she heals up? Or do I need to be worried about not reinforcing bad habits and making her spend the night squawking (and us listening to it) one way or the other? The rest of her recovery is a bit on the slower side; she still wanted to sleep most of yesterday but was definitely more alert overall, and was having trouble pooping until the end of the day when she finally got it out. She did eat 2 big meals which is much more than normal pre-surgery for her. She is on her prescribed pain meds, but she missed the first couple doses due to not eating.

I'd give her a couple more days to get back to her old self. Spaying was really not a good experience for us, between the cone and the random jumping because of pain, we had a pretty rough 4 days.

That being said.. we did ditch the crate at night for ours after she was spayed. She was 7 months and had had no accident for months, so there was really no reason to keep her crated at night (we kept the bedroom closed so she wouldn't get into things, but she's grown past that since as well). Now she sleeps on the bed with us and we're all happy, lol.

Could you move the crate into your bedroom until she is more settled then move it further away from you bit by bit until she is happy to be away from you altogether again?
