Dog Breed Check - Supposedly Mini-Bernese with King Charles

Hi All,

First of all, I don't care what the answer is, I love this dog. I just want to know because I have spent a lot of time researching BMD's and I'm starting to doubt that she is one. Supposedly, her mother is a pure Bernese and her father is a Bernese-KingCharles mix. She is about 5.5 months old and this picture is very recent. A few days ago we were walking her and met another pure Bernese that was the same age, and the differences were glaring. Puffy, curly, bear fur vs. silky shorter lab-type hair. Mine is much narrower in the head and body, with much leaner legs.

I am really starting to think my dog is not a BMD, but a Greater Swiss or Entlebucher. Since she's a mini, with King Charles, how do I get to the bottom of it? Is there a 23andMe for dogs? Any opinions?

She's teething too...obviously from the photo. That's the third table she's eaten....ugh

The dominant DNA tests that I'm aware of are Embark and Wisdom Panel.

We have used Embark multiple times. It's not cheap, but if you get on their email list there are frequent specials. Their better package also included a large number of health markers which might help make you, and your vet, aware of potential health issues that her breeds may be prone to.

I will always regret that I didn't DNA test a couple of great dogs I've had. Now it's too late.
The odds of her being part Swissie or Entlebucher are probably slimmer than her having something else in the mix besides Berner and CKCS.

Wisdom and Embark are the two tests that I've heard about most. There is another offered through the Darwin's Ark project, as well.

I just ordered Embark, thank you!
Embark is a great test to go with.

She could still be part Berner (mini "Berners" aren't a thing). Two purebred dogs can stand next to each other and look totally different depending on quality of genetics and breeding to standard.

She's cute!
Well, not too exciting but my breeder was honest. Embark says she's 76% Bernese and 24% King Charles spaniel. Right on the money. She's starting to fill out a little more like a Bernese, but she still has that great silky coat, not curly. Now if she could just stop eating tables and flip flops...
