What do you think are some of the down sides of a dog who barks excessively, Some people are of the view that a dog that barks at a lot of things is a good watchdog, do you think this is true? what to you think about that?

A dog who barks at everything is like a dog who barks at nothing...just noisier. If you are not interested in squirrels on your neighbor's lawn, leaves blowing around on yours, and etc., etc., etc., etc., etc.........then you will ignore him. If his barking is ignored, he may as well STHU.

You have to learn to distinguish between a dog's various barks.

Our dog has a different bark for

squirrels
deer
the dog next door
someone approaching the house

If I couldn't tell the difference it would just be a bunch of meaningless barking and seem excessive. Each of her barks has a reason.

Our neighbor's dog seems to bark for no reason (I know there's always a reason, even if it's just to hear himself bark, but you know what I mean), incessantly. Day, night, indoors or out.
