I have been seriously thinking about getting another dog for a companion for my Bella and have really just been unsure what I think would work for my family, as well as Bella. I am wanting something on the small side (do to the size of my car and already having Bella, who is nearing 60lbs, going to work with me everyday) but I want something that is sound enough that I don't have to worry about Bella hurting. Bella is very gental but she is big and playful so I would be scared of a real delicate dog.

So, to make a long story short, after considering several different breeds a dear friend of mine who is a very responsible breeder of the Havanese offered me one of her pups. From what I have been able to find in research they seeem to be pretty sound and well rounded dogs and souds like it would fit right in with our family, but, other than the friend that breeds them, I don't know anyone who has ever owned one. Is there anyone on here who has or has had one, and if so, what do you think??? The one I will be getting is a 9 week old female. She is cream colored and is small for the breed standard.

How much time have you spent with the adult Havanese that your friend owns? If you like them, a puppy from them should work for you.

I have met one havanese who loves, loves, loves my dog. They play off-leash in the woods which basically consists of the little havanese chasing Cherokee. It is a very cute and lively dog. The owner says she is timid with all other big dogs but, if your dog is good with small dogs, I could see you enjoying the combination.

I haven't really spent a lot of time with her dogs. Although she has had them for many years (been a breeder of the Havanese since the early 70's, which was before I was born) she and I live in different states. Usually when we get to visit one another it is either while she is here visiting the beach or we meet in the middle, so her dogs are usually not with her. She thinks they are the best breed ever and all of her breeders are health certified, ect.

The only thing that keeps holding me up on getting the one she has offered me is the fact that I don't know anyone else that has one or has ever had one and I am wondering if there is a reason why. That, and I really like to rescue and I just don't know that I shouldn't wait to get a rescue dog.

A Havanese is absolutely on my list. They are known for being big dogs in little packages. They are sturdy and very trainable. They have a low shed coat. I like them cause they look like fru-fru dogs, but don't have a fru-fru temperament, if that makes sense.

I second that. The one I know leaps and runs right along with my scrappy boy :D

Well then one would fit right in with my standard poodle! She looks all fru-fru, but is ALL dog!!

I think I will go for it!

This is a fabulous breed---I have one! I just posted a lengthy response on another thread, here is the link:

http://www.dogforums.com/19-first-time-dog-owner/47007-mal-shi-mini-labradoodle.html

Those who said they are a 'big dog in small dog's body' are right. They are not yappy, they are very smart and easily trained (due to a great desire to please) are sweet cuddly lap dogs, but yet will run and keep up with the best of them as far as the big dogs go. They are very social---and actually do better with another dog if you're away from home during the day.

They are expensive: around $2000 from a quality breeder. If you're getting one for free, and you can trust your friend that she isn't backyard breeding substandard dogs, I'd say take him!! :)

I actually told my friend last night that I wanted her. She is a cream, but my friend offered to give me a black and white if I wanted to wait a few months. I really don't care about the color and I told my friend I didn't want her papers either, all I want is a dog to be a companion to my Standard Poodle so she isn't lonely when I am not around.

My friend is an excellent breeder. She was actually one of the first few people to breed the Havanese back in the last '60's and early '70's. She doesn't have but about 3-5 puppies a year and either has them s/n or will only sell them with a s/n contract.

So, I should be getting my new puppy either Tues or Wed and should have some pictures of her today. I will post them as soon as I get them. Now I have to pick a name for her. Yeah!!!!:D:D:D

Oooh, thank you! I will post pictures as soon as I get them. I am very excited, I have been thinking about getting another dog for a while now. I kept thinking that one would come in on rescue that I really wanted, but none have been what I was looking for. There is a little year old yorkie coming in this week, but after doing the research, I think I would rather have the havanese.
