Last Fall we put in a GeoThermal thingy-jig, and our yard is still kinda dirt-y from it. Yesterday, Chipper actually went over and ATE some of the dirt.... why would he do that???

He's a dog. I can guarantee you he will eat grosser things than that if given the chance.
You and I discover the world around us by sight and touch. Dogs discover it by smell, taste and sound.

I'm sure your dog smelled the dirt first. Having determined that nothing in its smell was dangerous, he decided to give it the taste test. Don't confuse your sense of smell with his: he gets A LOT more information from smell than you and I do.

That said, his senses can fail him; think anti-freeze solution. So we need to be aware of the known hazards, but dirt probably isn't high on that list.

I know this from experience: many a time he's broght us dead things, or various parts of them... at one point in time you could create a whole animal from all of the parts he's found. I also watched him eat a whole baby groundhog....

The thing is, he didn't just taste it: he ATE it. He stood there for about 30 seconds, eating the dirt... it was just weird.

Don't worry, the dogs aren't allowed in the garage, so they're safe from getting into anything like anitfreeze (I know that it smells sweet to them, and that they like the taste.)
