We have an 8 week old Mini Aussie who has been with us for almost 2 weeks. We have been getting him comfortable in and around his crate, and he goes into his crate to nap on his own. I work from home and have been off with him for the last week, but am about to have days when I have to leave him in the crate for a few hours at a time. He's been home alone in the crate 3 times now, for about 1-2 hours each time. We use a plastic carrier with him in the car.

When we put him in the crate he cries and cries until he makes himself sick. The other night we left him in the crate for 45 minutes with my step-daughter home in another room, knowing she couldn't watch him on her own, and she told us he cried pretty much the whole time we'd been out. When I got home he had thrown up and was trembling with his ears back and wide eyes.

I have tried tiring him out, can give him a blanket with his parents' scent on it, and can even put his crate where he feels most comfortable in the house. My only concern with the blanket is he keeps having accidents and it gets soaked in. I do give him special treats when he has to go in.

He hasn't had to be in the crate consistently on a daily basis, and is most often in his carrier for car rides. I've been working with putting him in and closing the door for 5-10 minutes at a time while I'm home, and letting him out when he lies down.

He seems to have an easier time going in the crate when I put him in versus when my partner puts him in, so I'd love to know what to tell him to do too.

Is it normal for him to get that stressed out? And what can I do to make it easier for him?
