Is it ok to give dogs a cracker or two on a daily basis like a saltine, or a ritz? I stay with my elderly parents to take care of them, and my dad like to give my dog a cracker, or two. He says it's ok, but I would like to hear some feedback if it's ok, or not.

There are definitely healthier treats that you should try to stick with.

But a saltine cracker or two per day isn't going to be a problem if that's the only 'extra' your dog gets.

The problem is that when people say they are giving a dog a cracker or two during the day, they are often really giving him five or six - or more. And that could be a problem. Crackers have a LOT of sodium, not to mention the added calories.

Plus people who give treats like that don't usually give only one type. It becomes a habit to "give a little something to the dog" whenever they are eating, and you don't want to encourage that.
