I second leather just because of the cleaning/hair control aspect. Our dogs have thrown up so many times on the couch, I can't imagine cleaning that if I couldn't just wipe it off... Our 'fake' leather couch definitely has some scratch marks on it though, but with dogs I was pretty much expecting it anyway... I'd guess a higher quality leather wouldn't scratch so easily (and I'm cheap).
I bought a leather couch it is so much easier to clean I've had it for 5 yrs and none of my dogs have ever put a hole in it
I had a dog that shed horrible and leather made it much easier to clean off than when I had microfiber
