Considering neutering, thoughts?

Hey y’all,

I’ve been considering getting my dog neutered for a while now. I’d like to ‘cause all of his little dog friends are intact bitches and I’d he can act very pushy around them depending on the day. (ESPECIALLY the weeks after a heat cycle has ended.) I’d also like to do it for the all around ‘don’t want puppies’ thing.

However, I’m not completely sure it’d be good for his reactivity, or even if it would help his issue with being pushy. I’ve heard neutering can worsen behavioral issues— But is it still a risk I should take? I’m asking because I know, at the very least, the ONE thing is opposite sex related.

He’s a year and a half and 12 pounds, so likely done growing, thanks!

Neutering will likely ease his behavior around the intact females coming out of heat. Neutering will not increase or decrease his other behavioral problems.

The studies often quoted as showing neutering causes an increase in behavioral issues have been misrepresented. There is another thread that is specifically about those studies and what they actually showed, so I won't get into them now.

Remember that it only takes a moment for him to inpregnate a female. And many owners do not know how long to keep their intact females away to prevent pregnancies. So if he is actively attempting to mount the intact females he hangs out with, I would be concerned that the risk of a pregnancy is higher than acceptable. That leaves you with three choices:

Keep your intact male away from those intact females completely
Do nothing and retain that risk of pregnancies
Neuter your dog

You can't control the female dogs or their owners, so while you can study up on the female dog reproductive system to understand exactly how long they are "viable", you can't guarantee that the other owners will do the right thing and keep their dogs away. And there are several of them and one of you - it is easier to ensure your dog's non-participation in reproduction.

I never neuter a male dog unless for health reasons. That said my male dogs are not routinely around intact females.

Neutering rarely alters other behavioral issues.

Your choice.

It all depends on the circumstances. What is the age of your dog, and what is his temperament? Neutering has no effect on the temperament of some dogs, but it can have a positive or negative effect on the temperament of others, so assess the risks and benefits carefully.

I think we’re gonna end up going with it. Better for us to take the precaution than to not, from the looks of it!
