Chinese crested puppy wars

I have an 11 week old Chinese crested puppy. His ears were up when I got him at 8 weeks. They have since fallen. I am wondering if they will go up on their own or would they require taping? I saw an older thread on this topic where members had responded negatively wondering why the OP would care if they were up or down. I would appreciate info on the actual topic at hand. Thank you

Your best bet would be to ask your breeder what they do or how their lines typically turn out. It is not unusual for dogs with prick ears to have their ears fall during teething. Your breeder would probably be able to show you how to tape them if taping is required.

We actually have two male puppies from the same litter. One was a runt born without a tail and his ears are still up. We couldn’t leave him behind as the breeder gave us a great deal if we took both boys. Not the easiest task raising two puppies. He is also much more hairless than the one who had his ears fall.
As Lillith said, it's very normal for prick-eared puppies to have their ears go every which way as they're growing and developing (especially during teething). There's no way of knowing how their ears will settle at this point, so if standing ears are important to you, then yes, taping is going to give you the best chance of the cartilage hardening in that position. The earlier you start the better the results are, generally, but keep in mind it's something you'll have to keep up with until the ears are standing on their own, and that sometimes taping can't overcome genetics or environmental factors (like broken cartilage from roughhousing) and the ears will flop or fold over on top no matter what you do. It can be a fiddly process, and moreso if your pup is sensitive about handling and grooming. I chose not to glue my Lagotto's ear when we noticed it was developing funny because he was not maturing to be show quality anyway, and we wanted to concentrate on working with him being more comfortable with regular grooming.

If your breeder does any showing, they should know how to guide you through taping ears, and what tools and techniques worked best for their dogs in the past. I haven't had any experience taping prick ears, so I can't offer any personal advice, but this website might be a good place to start: Ear Taping

EDIT: oh, and cartilage is fully hardened around 1 year old, give or take, so there's really nothing you can do after that point.

yes Breeder is the best source of information and how too.

for GSD pups they do go up and down, and If they need help I step in and roll them/ brace them for being a big puppy to get the bases strong. during teething a pup can relax his ears for not feeling good.. active chewing is a good thing as it works the base muscle area of the ears

Thank you for your reply. We also have English Bull terriers. At 5 months old one of her ears fell, but then went back up on It’s own. We were just in the vicinity of the Chinese Crested breeder and she taped his ears for us. However, he shook it off and we taped them again. It was on for a day and he got it off again on one of his ears. It was actually back up, so it looks like it will be successful. We decided not to use the bridge anymore because that is what seemed to drive him nuts.
