Can somebody hold the treat for you? Or try smearing a small amount of butter, peanut butter or other delicious smeary food that's on his diet on the refrigerator, a plate or other easily cleaned surface. That should keep him busy while you are poking him. It is really hard at first but he will get more used to it and you will get the hang of it. I gave my elderly dog daily subcutaneous fluids, she had to stay still for 10-20 minutes at a time as it dripped in.

Also practice this every day. Get little treats, pinch his skin up and pretend he's getting his injection. Pretend to inject with a needle with the cap on so you cannot accidentally poke you or him. Then when it is the real thing he's already had a number of practice ones.
