I had a diabetic cat a few years ago and insisted on learning how to check her blood glucose with a monitor at home. I also learned to give her insulin shots based on those results. While the test strips can be pricey, I felt more in control of her care and just did checkups with the vet rather than pay them to run more tests every few weeks/months.

I don’t know where dogs get insulin shots, but I gave my cat hers at the back of her neck. It took me about a week to find the best way for me to do this. I would get on my knees on the floor with my equipment and a treat. I would place her between my knees facing out so I had easy access to the back of her neck and she could not escape from any direction. As soon as her ear prick (for testing) or injection was done, I’d give her the treat. It gets much better as you both find your routine.
