Lately (I would say this started about two week ago) Oscar's eating behaviour has changed. I normally feed him twice a day - he gets about 250 gr a day, like it says on the package for a dog his size and weight. But he will not finish his food like he used to. In the evening, when it is time for the second feeding, he will still have food left. Most days he ends up eating the normal amount by the very end of the day - but not always. He's not enthusiastic about his food at all. He eats other things I offer him: treats and chew toys like rawhide and bully sticks. Why isn't he eating like he did before? Does this mean anything? Or is it because he doesn't 'like' his food?

Sometimes dogs just get bored of their food, you might want to change flavors on the next bag of food, or maybe try adding little bits of treats or other goodies mixed into his kibble. Is he alright overall? Like have you seen any other behavioral changes? Have you changed his routine? If he is good, sometimes dogs just need to work up an appetite, and a good walk or run can get them hungry enough to finish their food. Sometimes the change in seasons could affect the amount they eat as well. I wouldn't worry too much if he's just leaving a little bit behind, just decrease his food, added tasty stuff, or give him more exercise. However, if he's leaving big portions (like half or more), I would take him to the vet, he could have parasites or something. I wouldn't recommend giving him more treats than the usual amount you gave him before. Sometimes dogs know they can always get something better, so don't finish or even eat their kibble.

Well yes, it's been getting alot warmer here. I would say I have been exercising him a bit more than usual, because it's such nice weather lately. I do mix in bacon, ham or bits of cheese, but the last few days he's been eating less and less. I made an appointment with the vet. I think it's parasites after all. Thanks for good advise.

I would like to make a suggestion ... after the vet is seen. I have always fed my dogs in the cooler of the day during the summer months. Usually before 7am and at 7 pm. ... if it is at all possible or convenient for folks. It seems to help their appetite when the heat of the day is not so great. :)
