Hi, I'm currently in the process of buying a border terrier puppy. He will be 9 weeks old when i am able to take him home and i was wondering if anybody had any advice about insurance prices and vet prices?
When will he need worming and flea treatments and his vaccinations? How often? When will he be able to go outside?
He will be my first puppy and so any help you can give me is greatly appreciated.

Talk to co-worker, friends who they use for a vet. When you get your pup schedule an exam asap. Breeders often have this in their contract. Most breeders will have a time line for returning a pup due to medical conditions. At the vets visit you will be given a vaccine/deworming schedule. At that time see if the vet has any brochures on insurance companies. good luck with your pup and please post pictures of your new guy. I have a border terrier travel 1 hour just so I can bathe it. Great dog. Everybody loves that dog.

Hi Catherine

Great choice, we love our new border pup! As already stated, get yourself to the local vets asap and they will get you started on jabs, worming etc. He will be able to go outside in a safe environment immediately (i.e. where there are no other dogs to catch anything from), we had Alfie in the garden within 15 minutes of having him home to get him to immediately start to associate the toilet with outside.

He'll need his second set of jabs before he's safe to take out near other dogs, which will be two weeks after the first set. The earlier you get him to the vet, the earlier you'll get out and about with him.

Worming is once every 3 months, we're applying frontline every couple of months but that will depend on your area and if/when he gets fleas!

Good advice so far.

Keep in mind that this is a terrier, and he will have a good dose of what is called the 'terrier temperament'. if you don't know what that means, you are in for it. Borders tend to be not as hard-case as some of the other terrier breeds, but they are hard enough. Start with your NILIF routines from the first day - don't be swayed by your pup's cuteness.

Also, start looking into training and activities for your pup. Puppy training is pretty generic, but as he gets older, you may want to try to locate a trainer who is familiar with terrier breeds, or at least read a book on training them. Once they are past the puppy stage, they do NOT respond very well to the 'usual' training methods.

A good book on training terriers is "When Pigs Fly: Training Success with Impossible Dogs" by Jane Killion.
