my dog woke up this morning with a bleeding bum. any ideas what its from?

Looks like a burst anal gland. Take him to the vet, he will need at least antibiotics. In the future, you may need to have the anal glands expressed more often.

I just looked at the pics you posted and the injury is in the exact location of the anal gland. It looks like a perianal fistula which means it probably started as an abscess and has now ruptured. You really need to get him checked out by the vet. There is also the possibility of perianal adenoma of adenocarcinoma and only your vet can tell you which condition he has.

Not to scare you but my dog has Squamous cell carcinoma, and she had several that ulcerated in that area. It looked a lot like that. I'd take lulusmom's advice and get him to the vet.
