I was just wondering if anyone has had a dog with bladder stones? How did you handle them?
My 4 year old Shih-tzu has them and I am doing the special food now to see if they will dissolve and so the doctor can decide what kind of stones they are.
He has been eating the food real well, but in the last 3 days has started not being able to keep it down.

I was just wondering if anyone has any experience with this. Also, wondering how much the surgery might be.

Thanks!!

A week after I adopted Cupid, I discovered he had a stone that was 2/3 the size of his bladder. As you might imagine, food to dissolve the stone wasn't an option at this point. Honestly, I couldn't believe how big the stone was when I saw it on the X-ray. He went straight to surgery.

It cost around $400, which included the X-ray, stone analysis, and the various medications he needed for a week or two afterward. He's doing much better now, going on five months later.

I'm sorry he's not keeping down the food. Did your vet have any suggestions?

I hope you'll keep us updated. I hate to see any dog go through this. If you have other questions about the surgery, feel free to ask.

Thank you for the information!

We had talked to the vet yesterday morning and again yesterday afternoon. She wanted to see him yesterday and said things were still looking OK. He got a shot for and some antibiotics and she wanted us to feed him chicken and rice for a couple days to settle his stomach. We will try the s/d food again. We still don't know about surgery, since she is not sure what kind of stones he has.

This morning he seemed to feel much better!
