I havent been on here in a while but i posted a while back about our new husky pup that we got.

Well I have an issue.

he has an appointment tomorrow to get fixed. Well this morning I woke up to find that he had mounted our italian greyhound, by the time I caught them it was too late I couldnt get either of them apart without hurting them. Our greyhound was never fixed because we never had the worry of her getting pregnant because our older husky was fixed when we got him. With our newer husky we thought we were doing the right thing and getting him fixed as soon as he was ready according to our vet. but obviously we are a day late.

I am aware of the possible health effect that having a large breed dog mate with a small breed dog. So I am wondering is there anything I can get from the vet to keep her from getting pregnant. like a morning after pill for dogs (I know it sounds funny but I am serious) Or am I going to have to get her in for an emergency spay. My vet is out of the office today so I am not sure what to do.

Any advice I could get would be wonderful.

here is a link with pictures of the dogs in question

No, I don't think there is a morning after pill. If I were you, I would spay her now. It's still very early on and while you don't have to rush her to the 24-hr vet right now per say, you should do it as quickly as possible.

I will probably take her instead of wolfie tomorrow if the vet allows it. I only have the money for one dog to get fixed until next week, or do you think it would be fine if she went to the vet next friday to get fixed, since this just occured.

He seems like a large dog to be mounting a dog as small as an Italian Greyhound. Yes they do have an after shot that you can give a bitch to prevent pregnancy. It's called a mismate shot and should be given within the first 72hrs of a tie. You'll have to counsult with your vet if they're eperienced with it and if it's a viable option. However since you don't plan on breeding your bitch it would be much easier if you had her spayed and got your new boy neutered as soon as you can afford to do so.

Call your vet and ask if he/she will spay your girl first.

How much does this mismate shot usually run? My vet is out of the office today so I cant call him and see if we can get the female fixed first. but I might be able to get him to give her the shot if we take her with tomorrow. He is usually accommodating so this may be a viable solution if we cant change appointments.

:( I wanted to get our boy fixed two weeks ago but my vet closed shop for a couple weeks for a vacation . What a headache this has become lol

Get her fixed first. That way, if something happens where you won't have the money next week, you won't have to put it off again.

There is some debate about whether it's better to wait until a male dog is older to neuter anyway, so I don't see that it would hurt much to wait a bit with him. Just be responsible and keep him away from other bitches in heat. :)

BTW, he's AMAZINGLY beautiful!!

thanks for the compliment. I got a hold of the vet's office this evening, the secretary was returning answering machine messages. She is going to be fixed tomorow.

our female normally goes into heat in may so we thought we had time. :( oh well lesson learned :)

We got another male husky in feb also but thats another thread, i'll post pics tommorrow after i get off work :D

Problem solved thanks everyone for your help

I was just going to say that I've heard that the mismate shot can really mess up a bitch's hormones, so it's safer for her to spay before the pregnancy implants. Unless she's a valuable breeding dog, the mismate shot shouldn't be used. So it's great that you're going to have her spayed so quickly! Much safer for her.

How old is your boy? Looks like 8-9 months? He's beautiful!

Have your vet spay your bitch, and opt for the spay rather than the shot. Even though your males are neutered, they will still mate with her, putting her at greater risk for pyometra.

That's awesome that you took care of business so quickly. Even though you had the accident, good to see you handle it responsibly. And, I'm glad the posters to this thread were supportive and didn't attack you for the mistake in the first place. Glad to see this resolved so quickly.

Beautiful dogs BTW.

This just happened to me. :(

I was absolutely unaware that a (long since) neutered male would tie (?) with a female. I have an appointment for my little girl at the end of the month. That was supposed to give her plenty of time to get over her second heat.

He never looked at her the first time. x.x
