For those of you with pups on behavioral meds, what were your experiences with upping the dosage vs. Finding out its maybe not the right med? We are working with a trainer certified in behvaior who does work with the 1 vet behaviorist in the area, so she has experience and our vet has taken her input. We started on Fluoxetine, 15mg, and increased to 20mg on the 3rd week. We are now almost at 5 weeks. I'm afraid its not helping much, but also don't want to dismiss it too soon. We had one good night where he actually got out on a walk, but then a few days later a motorcycle went by down the block and he booked it back to the door immediately. Strange things still set him off...like I yawned and must have made a different noise and he started barking and looking all around like crazy. We've worked on easy focus and targeting excercises this past month, and decreasing stimulating games like fetch. We started last week by bringing out a crate again to try to retrain him (he escaped it as a puppy). Just like to hear others experiences with this as its been difficult.

I've heard it can take around 2 months for the effects of fluoxetine to come into play. If I had a dog that was so hypersensitive that yawning (or other common low-level lifestyle stimulus) set him off I'd also ask my vet about a short term, fast acting med.

It was so strange...I'm not certain if that is what set him off or what! Sometimes knocks at the table, or he heard knocking on TV that set him off. It can change from day to day. The vet gave us Gabapentin for situational usage...we've only used it twice for storms, but hard to say if it helped yet. The trainer mentioned using something else in combination too, so I will have to ask. She already seemed certain the Fluoxetine may not be the right fit after 4wks...but everything I've read said it can take time.
