Beef Liver "Brownies"

I just made a batch of these for mine over the weekend and they went absolutely nutty over them! If your dog likes beef treats you should give these a try, they are really easy to make and it makes a ton of them! I used to buy beef liver treats around here for $12.00 for 6 ounces, these look exactly the same as the ones I used to buy and cost WAY less to make (and make a LOT more than 6 ounces!) :)

Beef Liver "Brownies"

1 pound fresh beef liver
3 eggs
1 1/2 c. Wheat germ
1 1/2 c. Flour

Preheat Oven to 350 degrees.

Put all of the ingredients into a food processor or blender.

Puree until very smooth (about 4 minutes)

Grease a 13x9 pan with olive oil then spread the mixture into the baking dish until you have a well even layer across the entire pan.

Bake at 350 degrees for 20-25 minutes.

Partially cool, then cut into small (1 inch) pieces while still warm.

Cool completely and then remove from pan.

Store in fridge or freezer.

Serve in small quantities as these are quite rich.

What kinda flour? I read that you should use whole wheat flour instead of regular bleached.
It's up to you really, I know people who use regular flour and don't have any problems with it. I use an organic wheat flour but honestly, the amount for the entire recipe is so small when you break it down to the actual amount they are going to consume at once in that tiny one inch square I don't think it makes that much of a difference. Wheat flour is probably better but I don't think regular flour used in a treat will hurt your dog at all...
Could you do this with chicken liver too?
Absolutely! I use the same recipe and just substitute the beef liver for chicken liver and it works great! My dogs really LOVE these too!

I usually make more of a liver bread but I tried a version of this today.

A pack of beef liver and kidney that has been waiting in the freezer for meat and bone to make up meals for Max, maybe 1/4 pound, 3 eggs, 1 clove garlic and about 1 cup of flour. I used the blender and it wasn't happy. Next time I could just add another egg. I poured the goo on a parchment paper covered cookie sheet and baked at 350*F for about 15 minutes until set. It cut beautifully into teeny training treats and didn't stick to the paper at all. That little bit of egg and organ made up a good pint of goodies. The blender wasn't even very hard to clean up.

Thanks!

Interesting, I didn't know it would work with kidneys in it....good to know, so glad it turned out for you! :)
i made these last friday and iorek really likes them. but, i don't!! heehee! it was probably one of the grossest things i have ever done. my food processor didn't like the potato flour that i used (i didn't want wheat, possible sensitivity...) so i had to add 2 more eggs, olive oil, and finally water to get it to more of a thick batter. i looked up the conversion online and omitted the wheat germ. when i took the cup part off the base of the food processor it was suctioned on with liver goo. blah! there was a lot of clean up and so much stink!! i have TONS of "brownies" in my freezer now.

thanks for the recipe! i know iorek appreciates it :) heehee!
Sounds like you had quite a mess! Liver goo...sounds delightful. lol
Mine wasn't all that messy, I did put the eggs in the blender first and mixed them around a bit before adding the other ingredients, maybe that makes a difference? Glad iorek likes them and hopefully you won't have to make more anytime soon with all that you baked :)
haha! yeah, liver goo is wonderful! :S

i made the mistake of putting the flour in the food processor first. probably i should have done the eggs then added the liver and then the flour until it was the right consistency. that would have been the smartest thing to do...no one said i was smart! heehee! i didn't quite think it through, but if i do make them again this is the way i will do it.
Yeah, adding the eggs first should help....don't worry, I've made more than a few mistakes when it comes to cooking and ended up with HUGE messes because of it! LOL

If you find your "batter" is still too thick even with adding the eggs first you could add a few Tablespoons of water and see if that helps to get your mixer going.

Oh, the eggs first. I will try that next time. I have a higher liver tolerance now I have been giving it to the dogs for at least 10 years. Dump the liver/egg out and then add the flour, that would help as well. Meat goo is easier to clean up than dough goo.
Yes, I think hand-stirring in the flour might be easier for some, depending on what kind of blender/food processor you have. I made these the other day with chicken liver and realized they don't have to cook quite as long, only about 15-20 minutes for "chicken liver brownies" for whatever reason...
