The only requirement for the AKC Marketplace is that the puppies listed for sale be purebred and eligible for AKC registration, and that the breeder not have their AKC privileges suspended. I've seen everything from excellent breeders to high-volume commercial breeders who produce a dozen or more litters a year, so you do have to know what you are looking at.

Good Dog is something of a conundrum for me. They do have minimum standards for things like health testing in order for breeders to be listed, but other than that... well, I've seen people there that I would call puppy mills, with lots of adults and litters almost always on the ground. That said, I did find the breeder I just bought my Standard Poodle puppy from on Good Dog, and I do suggest that people who are looking for purpose bred mixes use it as a starting point, with the caveat that they still need to do their own research of things like health issues in the parent breeds.
