Dexter has been guilty of really bad diarrhea for the last 4-5 days. All liquidish. It started when I gave him Heartguard, as I do every month. He did have worms (once again...he's a pro at those).

I gave him some rice, but it didn't help. I've seen the canned pumpkin recommendation, but we don't have any here. I do make sure he's fully hydrated.

Other than that, he's top shape. Eats well, lots of energy, etc... The bad phase of diarrhea doesn't even seem to bug him. Bugs me though....tricky to clean and he has long white fur on his behind, so it's not exactly classy.

The only thing I know of that works like a charm is PumPkin. I know this doesn't help you now but maybe when you make your next trip back to civilization you can buy a case of it? Hopefully this clears fast and someone else will have a good recommendation for you because dingleberries are definitely not classy and we all know that Dex is 100% class.

It's not even a case of dingleberries...it's a case of long streaks of liquid poops all over his behind. Far, far, far from classy!

Can you get any sort of fresh pumpkin, squash or sweet potato/yam? Cook and mash, use as for canned pumpkin.

A good thing to stock up on as well is slippery elm which is a powder that you can mix with a bit of water, same idea as pumpkin.

Diatomaceous earth is another good thing to get, you can give a bit daily and it'll keep the intestinal worms away. I'm going to start my crew on it because it'll also keep the flies down and our one cat is on a steady diet of mice. I swear she'll walk out the back door, go around the corner and walk right back with a mouse sometimes....

If you have any pepto bismal around you can give him 1ml per pound of his weight or Imodium or Kaopectate at 0.1mg per lb, so like one tiny pill if he's a pretty big dog. That just treats the diarrhea and not the cause, just like in people so don't give it more than a few times, and if it doesn't make it better try something else. Good luck!!

Hmmmmm I might try the imodium solution if it's not better tomorrow. Because fresh produces (especially vegetables) are tricky to get here.

what about something like metamucil or some other type of fiber supplement? Would that be available? It sounds counter intuitive to give fiber for diarrhea but it actually regulates the system and can calm it down. Its the same idea as giving canned pumpkin, which is very high in fiber. And have you done the whole skin pinching thing to check if he's hydrated? If it tents and doesn't snap back down immediately then he's dehydrated. Works with people too!

No dehydration. Metamucil could also be an option. I've tried not feeding him during lunch, to see if it helps. If it's not better tomorrow, I'll try a bit of pepto bismol and move on to metamucil during the weekend (although I'd worry more if it's not better at this point)!

Glycerol is a laxative.

I'd fast him for a full day, then do chicken and rice (plain boiled, no sodium) for the next day or two.

Applesauce? Cooked carrots? Dollop of yogurt?

An alternative to chicken and rice is mashed potatoes (plain, instant) and canned tuna (low salt, packed in water).

Hopefully it's fixed for now. . .but I guess there's a med that vets have called Diagel that stops diarrhea pretty much instantly. Might be worth having your vet mail some to you for future use if he's prone to tummy troubles.

We use Pepto Bismol for our Persian cat who's prone to digestive troubles. It will stop the diarrhea. We have to be careful about what he eats but with 3 other cats, the Chi, and a sloppy teenage son, occasionally he'll manage to eat something tasty that his digestive system can't handle well.

You have enough suggestions... When I need pumpkin, I can usually find a can of it for about $2.50 in the pie filling section. Plain and organic seem to cost the same...

I really appreciate the help and suggestions when I have questions. I also get the fact people usually can't understand I can't find some basic things here (no way I could find anything pumpkin related).

So just for the kicks, tell yourself that if you can't imagine it can be bought in our grocery store/gas station/general store, you pretty much have to drive at least 620 km to buy it.

Still a tad too soft, but much much better since the fast. We had a big heat wave for a few days (no seriously) and my dog doesn't tolerate such thing too well. It's back to 4° this morning. It should help with the remaining liquidness and mucus!

If you can find them online and get them shipped to you, Endosorb tabs are a great thing to have. They are not an antibacterial/viral or something that will kill anything. But they do help diarrhea by absorbing excess water/toxins in the gut. Maybe for future use, if you can get them.

Great idea....do I find those at the vet or pet stores or in a normal pharmacy? We're driving back to civilization in about a month...I'll put that on my to-buy list!
