I just adopted a dog that I think is at least mostly Coonhound if not all. It would be great to talk to someone who knows about them. Maybe share pictures and info.

I don't own one but I spend quite a bit of time with a bluetick coonhound named Belle who I sit for.

she is about eight years old and really sweet. her howls can be heard from a mile away though lol..

There's a Plott hound, or possibly Plott hound mix, out in my yard trying to climb a tree to catch a sparrow. I don't think the sparrow realizes just how determined this dog can be.

What would you like to know?

I work with quite a few Black and Tan coonhounds, Plotthounds, Red Bone Coonhounds and Blue ticks with my rescue project.
One thing I can say is, I never met a mean one. :)

I'd really like to know if you think she is pure Coonhound or if you see something else in her. We think she is about 18 months and she weighs 37 lbs. To me it looked like she needed to gain weight. She wasn't eating at the shelter and since we have had her she is eating like a pig. She still hasn't gained anything though so I guess she is where she should be.

Do Coonhounds have white on them? She has white on her chest, under her chin and on her back feet. I tried taking pics to show you what she looks like. She doesn't like the camera. She is extremely fearful. We don't know what happened to her. She has opened up a lot and is a real sweet girl. Very affectionate and loving. We just have one issue with our older Beagle that we need to work on. Sometimes, usually when he corrects her, she will get aggressive with him. Some think she is playing, others think it is her trying to find her place in the pack. Either way it has to stop cause I don't want him getting hurt.

Inga....She seems to be really kind and actually considerate for the most part. She is really smart too.....it takes no time for her to learn a new command.

RonE....I took her out yesterday and there was a squirrel in the yard. She took off back to the house. Not much of a hunter at this point.

zimandtakandgrrandmimi.....Tessa enjoys her howling. She also makes this other funny noise when she is excited....kinda like a howl and a chirp.

She has been a lot of fun. We have lots of work to do too.

I've owned a Back & Tan,my father in law raised Walkers and Blueticks for 30+ years. Its really hard to tell wether the dog is a coonhound or part without pictures. It's not uncommon for mixed breeds to look like certain dogs. One of the traits in coonhounds is a deep baying bark and a high pitched bark when treeing.Hope that helps.

She definitely has a deep baying bark/howl and maybe that chirpy/howl that I am refering to is her high pitched treeing bark. Our neighbors have asked "what kind of dog did you get??? She is loud." I think they are more concerned with ...is she mean??? We don't let her just bark and howl all day. I let most of the neighbors know that she is a sweetie and more afraid of them.

Did my pictures not show up?? I hope to get better ones soon. When I get the camera out she stops and lays in her bed. All my other dogs were camera hams....they'd actually pose for pictures. :D

My bad! I thought she was somebody elses dog! She looks to be part hound,at least 3/4 of one anyway. It looks to be either part Black&Tan or a Plott Hound. She looks nice!

She sure is a cutie! She looks A LOT like my Lily who is an 8-9 month old black and tan coonhound mix who weighs about 42 pounds. I have had another coonhound before and both were definetly scent hounds and not ones to want to come when called if they smell something good ;) The bark/howl is definetly a personality trait, it can be very loud. Lily is a very sweet girl, eager to please but not the smartest dog I have ever had. She is amazing with my 3 boys and an all around great family dog.

oh and Lily also has white on her chest, I will see if I can update with a recent pic of her :)

Yup she looks Black and Tan Coonhound to me. Maybe a little Beagle in there. Her ears are a bit shorter then I have seen and her face a touch more triangle shaped. She is a beauty though. I am so partial to black and tan myself. :)
