Just out of curiosity was it breeders who told you it was rare for them to be black? Thanks for the info and the link. Everyone I've spoken to who knows the breed has told me that solid black ABD puppies are rare and that's ok with me, my boy is rare and absolutely special
Will have picks coming soon!![]()
Rare is usually another word for "undesirable trait/color that we can make more $ off to people who don't know better".Any color, color pattern, or combination of colors is acceptable, except for solid black, solid blue, and tricolor (white with patches of black and tan). Some dark brindle coats may appear black unless examined in very bright light. A buckskin color pattern, where the base of the hair is fawn and the tips are black, may also appear solid black. A judge should not disqualify an American Bulldog for black color unless the dog has been examined in sunlight or other equally bright light.
Disqualifications: Solid black or blue with no white markings; tricolor (white with patches of black and tan).
Spicy you are right it has been awhile I don't pay attention since I don't show or breed. The other is the ABA and they use to require 90% white which I think I was thinking of and I think they also have changed the rules. That dog would make all the clubs now having that little bit of white on him. I still would like to know who is calling it a rare breed? Here is from the UKC standard. More white is preferred for this breed but sometimes you get dogs who are mostly solid, at least some that I've seen.

I have only been able to locate one decent breeder quite a ways from where I live and he says that solid black is rare and not desirible in the breed. The vet also said the same things, as well as a couple people who love the breed. Have I been given false info?Just out of curiosity was it breeders who told you it was rare for them to be black?
Thanks for the reply. I do agree that rare is probably a term used for unsuspecting buyers, but for little Cain I refuse to use the term undesirible so I'll stick to saying he's rare and special. ; )Here is from the UKC standard. I have only been told that solid black is rare for an ABD. I haven't been told the breed is rare, just Cains coloring as he is mostly black with the exception of his chest and below his mouth which are white.Spicy you are right it has been awhile I don't pay attention since I don't show or breed.
