American bulldog coloring/markings

I am new to the American bulldog breed as Cain is our very first. Some people have told me that ABD are solid white with markings. I was just wondering because our Cain is solid black with white on his chest and very little white on his (chin) area
He looks just like the ABD puppies in the books we've bought and on the sites we've looked at. Our baby Cain is our little rescue. He was found on a portion of another couples 33 acres, along with mom and his littermates. Dad wasn't found until 2 days later when he came walking up to the couples back porch. Dogs and cats get dumped on their property often as it is far out in the country and much of their property isn't gated or anything. Everyone assumed the male was the father of the litter, but of course he may very well not be. I'm just curious about my little bundle of fur. We usually assist with the rottis and pitbulls that are rescued, so this is new for us and we love Cain dearly, mixed or not! I was just wondering if there are any ABD that are solid black with white markings. Mom is solid white with brownish spots/markings and dad (assuming he is dad) is solid white with black spots/markings.
I apologize for the long post:)

Hopefully I'll be able to have pictures up soon of both Zena and our lil Cain. :)
ABs are registered under the UKC and they are requried to be 90% white but yes I have seen very few that were black. Doing rescue for as long as I have for them I haven't personality have not taken any in all black with little white. I would love to see a Picture of the pup I bet it is so cute!

Thanks for the info and the link. Everyone I've spoken to who knows the breed has told me that solid black ABD puppies are rare and that's ok with me, my boy is rare and absolutely special:)

Will have picks coming soon! :)

Just out of curiosity was it breeders who told you it was rare for them to be black?
Here is from the UKC standard. More white is preferred for this breed but sometimes you get dogs who are mostly solid, at least some that I've seen.

Any color, color pattern, or combination of colors is acceptable, except for solid black, solid blue, and tricolor (white with patches of black and tan). Some dark brindle coats may appear black unless examined in very bright light. A buckskin color pattern, where the base of the hair is fawn and the tips are black, may also appear solid black. A judge should not disqualify an American Bulldog for black color unless the dog has been examined in sunlight or other equally bright light.

Disqualifications: Solid black or blue with no white markings; tricolor (white with patches of black and tan).
Rare is usually another word for "undesirable trait/color that we can make more $ off to people who don't know better".

Spicy you are right it has been awhile I don't pay attention since I don't show or breed. The other is the ABA and they use to require 90% white which I think I was thinking of and I think they also have changed the rules. That dog would make all the clubs now having that little bit of white on him. I still would like to know who is calling it a rare breed?

I have only been able to locate one decent breeder quite a ways from where I live and he says that solid black is rare and not desirible in the breed. The vet also said the same things, as well as a couple people who love the breed. Have I been given false info?

Thanks for the reply. I do agree that rare is probably a term used for unsuspecting buyers, but for little Cain I refuse to use the term undesirible so I'll stick to saying he's rare and special. ; )

I was just curious because some have said that black american bulldogs are rare because most ABD are more white in color than not. Either way we love him and I'll continue to learn as much as I can about the breed.

I have only been told that solid black is rare for an ABD. I haven't been told the breed is rare, just Cains coloring as he is mostly black with the exception of his chest and below his mouth which are white.
You have been given good information and the breed is considered a rare breed. I have been rescuing them for ten years and have not had a black one.:) I am glade you rescued this little puppy and I can't wait to see pictures of him.
