Just so no one feels bad about their escaping dogs, here's my story from Saturday.

I was taking the garbage out through the basement and didn't realize Kabota was right behind me. (He rarely follows me down there.) As soon as I opened the door, he was off. I drop the garbage and take off after him.

At the end of the block, I realize I'm chasing a dog, which is stupid, and whistle. He turns to look at me, and I run in the opposite direction. He chases me, runs past me, turns, runs past me again, and keeps going in his original direction along the river.

Mind you, I have no idea whether or not Kabota can swim, but I know I can't.

I follow him along the river until we reach the bridge. The whole time, he keeps stopping, looking back at me and grinning. "Isn't this fun?" he seems to be saying. As soon as we reach the bridge, he immediately goes down a little path to under the bridge, right along the banks of the river. Kabota finally stops running to sniff along the banks.

"Kabota! Sit!"

He looks at me. This time I sign "sit". (He's much better with signs.) He cocks his head at me. I sign "down". He cocks his head the other way. I sign "stay" and he runs right for me. Of course. Commands mean treats. Too bad I didn't think of that earlier.

Just as he is about to reach me, a duck lands in the river next to us. I can see Kabota about to jump, and I ended up tackling him as he was leaping after the duck, who stared at us like we were crazy.

Then I had to walk a mile back home bent at a 90 degree angle holding his collar because I didn't have a leash on me and 45lbs is about 25 lbs more than I can carry. As soon as I got home, my mother-in-law showered him with treats and baby talk while I poured hydrogen peroxide on my scraped up knees.

It's a dog's life, indeed.

Here's what he's running from, btw:

Clearly, he must escape the laps and treats and toys. Who could be expected to put up with that?

It was so obvious he was having fun and he clearly thought I was, too. I wasn't mad at him, I was just terrified he was going to hurt himself.
