After the Bear Cub Incident on Monday, we had a Squirrel Incident on Tuesday and a Rabbit Incident tonight... and all I can say is that I have a Reall Good Dog.

Tuesday we were out for the morning walk and a Red Squirrel ran across the road in front of Atka. She started to chase and I told her to LIE DOwn. And she did.. not ALL the way down (elbows on the ground) but a stop and a lie down much like she has herding. The point is, she stopped, watched the squirrel and then refocused on me. Very Nice!

Tonight I was mowing the grass (an acre and I push mow it). I have two patches I have not cut because they are full of wild strawberries. I was mowing around one of those and Atka was sniffing the other side and literally UNDER her nose out jumped a 1/2 grown rabbit.

Now really.. what dog would not give chase? Atka did and she had her nose touching the rabbit.. PRESSING on it.. she was that CLOSE to me.

I told her to "LEAVE it" and then LieDOWN!" and she did... she then started to follow again and again I had her leave it and lie down.. She did this three times (remember, this dog has had 3 Formal herding lessons and my training.. and if she were sheep training she would still be dragging a check rope).

She then HELD her lie down and refocused on me.. and then watched the unhurt rabbit scamper into the hedgerow. THEN she refocused again on me.. and this all over the Din of the Mower (it is a pull start.. one does not shut if off)!

She did not go back to try to find the rabbit and we finished that section of lawn with no more bunnies.

This, my friends, is a REALLY GOOD DOG and I am very pleased with her. All the training is paying off. Yes indeedy I feel like I won the prize! :D

Its just a little brag... VERY little considering the REST of the story (below):

Now tonight we go to more Dog Skool. The tasks of this skool are things she already knows how to do every where we go.. EXCEPT at dog skool.

The entire object of dog skool from Atka's point of view is to see how stupid she can make me look. Laughter is optional but if there is any (or clapping) it encourages her. It is embarassing for me... all these nice, well behaved dogs sitting at their handler's side.. and my dog sits at my side for all of 3 minutes and then gets up and does things like wrap the leash around my legs or bark at me for not "getting going" etc....

Tuesday night dog skool we did some heel work and a right about. Dog does this. Have proofed it everywhere. She is GOOD at it.. EXCEPT at dog school where (somehow) it is not important. I did the foot work.. and dog did something else.. and I tripped over her.. and she stood in front of me, facing me, tongue out in a doggy laugh... (uh.. I thought I said heel, I really think I did say that word.. standing in front of me and facing me is NOT heel...). *sigh*

The ppl at dog school never believe my stories of rabbits and bears. They actually believe my dog is totally untrained.

What a good girl, though that is to funny about dog school.

On the other hand I'd rather a dog that didn't listen in school but did listen everywhere else than one that listened at school but nowhere else.

I am going to keep this in mind when we are there. Obedience is nice for shows, trials and the rest.. but it is IMPORTANT where the rubber meets the road.

I sent a link for this thread to my dog, Mabel. But she's very bad about checking her email...because she's usually out hunting.

Hunting is fine.

My rule is it can only come AFTER the dog has a solid stop command. Atka stops, but, IMO, not quick enough for me to allow the next phase which is the Chase command.

I think a very reliable STOP on a dog (Whoa) actually BUILDS drive. I know that sounds funny but a good stop means the dog is listening and obedient while still not getting what he/she wants which is to chase. Maybe that makes NO sense??? It is what works for me?

I may be wrong about this but I think most handler's issues with a dog and prey drive is that the dog has been allowed to CHASE before learning STOP CHASING. Chase is very self rewarding made especially more so by catching the thing being chased. It is the one thing I have never had to generalize/proof in a dog.. it is THAT important in Dogdom.

With Atka I have initiated CHASE but only with a toy on a rope.. and even then I will have her lie down in mid chase because STOP CHASING is what she needs real solid first.

Well Elana, now I have to counter-brag about my dobie "Stryker". I used to take out in the open range to chase rabbits and gophers. He finally caught a gopher, had him it in his mouth, right in the center of the body so he would not get nipped. He did not bite down hard, just held it, not sure what he wanted to do, and I said leave it, and he dropped it immediately. Then I noticed he did get a bite on his nose. He also, had a recall that really was amazing, he could be chasing a rabbit in full speed and would stop and return if I whistled.
I miss that dog, no other could ever replace him....,, although as I finished this line I see my little girl at my feet looking at me, I apologized to he.:)

Last night at Dog School Atka decided not to embarass me.. and was stellar. Another Point for her.

You know Bob, I almost got a Dobie one time. Stryker sounds like a great dog. I am surprised you don't get a good GSD or another good Dobie. this dog does not replace Stryker.. but might be as good a dog in their own way.

Kazi was like that too (my last GSD).

I plan to get Atka trained to be as good it is coming along. It is nice to have a well trained dog.. it makes life with a dog so easy.

Hi Elana, Thanks for your comments, I should say this on a PM, but I hang around here because I look forward to your helpful input and wisdom from years of challenging experiences!

I must say, I really am not a trainer of dogs, all I have going is alot of patients, and a love that never lets me get angry at my dogs when they do something outrageous. At one point I felt I was pretty good, but really it was the dobie that was exceptionally intelligent and taught himself:) I almost picked the GS, but I thought that the dobie would shed less since i wore whites alot in the service, but still ended up using a roll of tape, before I went to work each morning.

My present two dogs are min- like to say Sh_ts, schnauzers, They are completely out of control, and they bark like in that other post all the time, and I rattle the can, and they laugh at me. I take them for a walk and they both want tp go in two different directions, glad they are small dogs. But they end up choking themselves, when together. Our house is a comedy scene, you have to have a GOOD sense of humor, or you will have a nervous breakdown for sure.

Today my wife is going out with the "Red Hatters" for the day, so the dogs have me for the whole day, which means I can not get anything done. Cannot even work out because they want me to excercise them instead. To show you how dumb I am, thought smaller dogs are easier to control over larger breeds, Wow was I wrong.

One last thing when ever I give advice on this forum, I keep saying to myself I should keep my fingers quiet, I am a poor example of a dog owner, with these two guys........... Bob

PS If it were not for these two little j4yd28s, I probable would be out in Deadwood, drinking and gambling and losing my pants.:D Maybe even getting shot in the back at Hickocks casino:D Have a Nice Day!!!!

I have been to Deadwood. I have photos of Hickocks Grave.... with Calamity Jane who was perhaps a Hermaphrodite..

What is the Steam train.. goes from Deadwood to.. Keystone???? Took that.. but in retrospect I would have been happier taking photos of its passing or firing it. There is something about a Steam Engine.... I was there in September 2006. I didn't drink in any of the bars. I almost left the now X BF there.. but why pollute such a place as SD? I brought him back and THEN got him to leave.. and got a dog. Vast improvement.. :D

If you got Stryker to do your bidding in the manner that he did, you could get another like minded dog to do the same. Considering the need for Dress Whites, I am surprised you didn't have a white dog. They do make them in that color... ;)
