I have a merle female and was looking at a black tri Aussie to breed to her. The male has a merle mother, red tri father. Is he likely to produce double merle's?

Short answer: probably not, since it's very unlikely that he carries the gene. Merle is a dominant gene, meaning one copy of the genes shows expression of the pattern, so you can ~usually~ tell if a dog is genetically merle by looking at the dog.

HOWEVER, there are "cryptic merle" dogs where the markings are either so minimal/inconspicuous as to be unnoticed or are masked by white markings.

My understanding is that in breeds where merle is present, a gene test for the merle alleles is often included in the breed specific DNA panel testing for this reason.

The fact that you're asking means that you should really know more about your dog breed before breeding anyway. Did you do health testing on your dog?
