Short answer: probably not, since it's very unlikely that he carries the gene. Merle is a dominant gene, meaning one copy of the genes shows expression of the pattern, so you can ~usually~ tell if a dog is genetically merle by looking at the dog.

HOWEVER, there are "cryptic merle" dogs where the markings are either so minimal/inconspicuous as to be unnoticed or are masked by white markings.

My understanding is that in breeds where merle is present, a gene test for the merle alleles is often included in the breed specific DNA panel testing for this reason.
