  1. Teaching puppy that former family member poses threat

    Dog Training Forum
I had a 116# black lab who was quite protective of my wife and children and could put on an impressive show if he thought they were threatened. Still, for actual protection and not just a convincing bluff, the only large breed probably less suited than a lab is a Newfoundland.
  2. Narrowing down potential illness

    Dog Health Questions
Sure SOUNDS like you're asking h for a diagnosis.
  3. Trying to find a 'corn/grain free' dog food

    Dog Food Forum
At the recommendation of my vet, I recently switched our two dogs to a grain-inclusive kibble. I actually had some difficulty finding a quality food that was not grain-free.
  4. New Designer Breeds.

    General Dog Forum
My late hellhound Esther was likely a Plottweiler. There was an idiot in our area that was breeding Plott Hound/Rottweiler mixes, trying to make a better bear dog than the one developed by Jonathon Plott. Esther ended up in a shelter. She was, to put it mildly, a handful. I miss her terribly.
  5. Allergic to new puppy. Looking for advice or success stories

    General Dog Forum
When I married, my wife was violently allergic to dogs - as in can't breath and rush to the ER. She went through a long series of allergy shots and 17 years after we were married we got a gigantic, double-coated black lab - possibly the worst possible dog for someone who is/was allergic. Since...

  7. Favorite and least favorite breeds

    General Dog Forum
I always preferred larger dogs. I had an 85# Irish setter mix, a 116# black lab, a 90# Plott mix and a 65# chocolate lab mix. Then our daughter's miniature schnauzer came into our lives. He lived with us for 5+ years while our daughter was in school. He had so much personality (not all of it...

  11. Arthritis care for dogs

    Dog Health Questions
Talk to your vet about pain-relief meds. I keep some Gabapentin on hand and use it only when my senior lab/weim mix is having a particularly bad day. She also doesn't like being carried.
  12. CBD for dogs. Yes? No?

    General Dog Forum
Since CBD is, at this time, totally unregulated, it actually COULD hurt, unless you are certain of the reliability of the source and you truly know what you're getting. That being said, I know there are cases of dogs being helped and I'm not specifically aware of cases of dogs being harmed.

  14. Pepto Bismol changed ingredients Xylitol

    Dog Health Questions
I usually assume that anything I read on FaceBook is false until proven otherwise. It's an occupational holdover from working as an investigative researcher for a health-insurance fraud department.
  15. Pepto Bismol changed ingredients Xylitol

    Dog Health Questions
    Apparently false. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/pepto-xylitol/

  17. Most recent update on the DCM issue. 6-27-19

    Dog Food Forum
I didn't read the study or the list of affected foods. My own vet, who I trust completely, urged me to switch from grain-free to include at least some grain-inclusive foods, based on both the studies and personal experience in her practice and I did. My son's vet in Minneapolis, who he trusts...

  19. A Very Difficult Situation

    Attention All New Members
It is a happy ending when an owner does the right thing and surrenders a dog (or dogs) to someone who clearly cares more for them. Years ago I was teaching SCUBA in Santa Barbara when a dog followed me from the parking lot into the shop where I worked. We escorted her out the back door and she...
  20. Pit bull Border Collie mix

    Attention All New Members
Personally, I would never get a second dog without first having a meet-and-greet with the first one - preferably on neutral ground - though I know this isn't always possible. The difference in age and gender should push the odds of success in your favor. Has your current dog had an experience...
