  1. 9 MOS OLD SHIH TZU chewing wood

    Dog Training Forum
Have you tried Bitter Apple? Tucker hates the taste.
  2. Dog BackPack for Lab

    Dog Training Forum
I've been thinking about one of these for Tucker. Thanks for the pics!
  3. Can someone tell me how to teach the "stay" command?

    Dog Training Forum
When can you be sure the dog has "fully learned" the new behavior? When he does it 95% of the time? Tucker is going through the adolescent stage and while I "think" he knows the behavior, he sometimes chooses not to do it.
  4. How to teach STAY?

    Dog Training Forum
Thanks for the information! I realize now that I've gone too far, too soon with Tucker P Macaroon regarding <stay>. Part of my problem is that I haven't been consistent with my release cue.
  5. Problems Off the Lead

    Dog Training Forum
Just re-read this thread and there are a lot of great suggestions here. Rewards don't have to be food, but I'll tell you this: Tucker *loves* roast beef. He got a small roast for his birthday, and little bits of roast beef almost top raw hamburger in his book (also a lot easier to handle)...
  6. How do you train to stop barking when told?

    Dog Training Forum
Squishy, the yawning really works. Tucker P Macaroon used to bark all the time, day or night. I've been working with him over the last month or so, investigating the sound (basically I get between the dog and the sound), thanking him for alerting, saying "that's enough", and yawning. He's much...
  7. Anyone use Cosequin supplement they'd like to reccomend?

    Dog Food Forum
That's what Tucker P gets. It's working great; no more rimadyl <sp?>.
  8. Making puppy bite himself to stop biting me?

    Dog Training Forum
Every time Tucker had my hand in his mouth I would say "gentle" in a soothing voice, drawn out like "gennnntle", then say "good boy", also in a calming voice. Also, as soon as he would soften the hold, I would remove my hand.
  9. Making puppy bite himself to stop biting me?

    Dog Training Forum
When Tucker was younger, he was a biter, too (show me a puppy who isn't LOL). Saying "OW!" only made him more stimulated, so I taught him to be "Gentle" when he had his mouth on me. Now when I put my hand in his mouth, he uses his tongue to push it out. I don't want him to mouth me at all, but...
  10. Dog Digging!

    Dog Training Forum
I tried this for my puppy, but it only stopped him digging in *those* areas where he's already dug, and it's not feasible to fill every inch of the yard with poop. Sometimes the Grand Peanut likes to dig to lay in cool earth, sometimes to bury a toy or a chewie or a bone. Good luck!
  11. Share YOUR dogs, "Then and Now" pictures!

    Dog Pictures Forum
Tucker at 9 weeks, now at 12 months
  12. What breed/mix is my puppy?

    Dog Pictures Forum
Whatever she is, she sure is cute!! And her paws are so big compared to her legs. Mr. Macaroon was like that when he was a pup, too. I'm guessing there's chihuahua in there somewhere. How big is she? I call Tucker a smorgasbord.
  13. Mr. Macaroon: what am I?

    Dog Pictures Forum
Here's my puppy (12 months and 100+ pounds) I see a lot of Anatolian Shepherd in him, but he also has webbed feet and his snout is longer. What do you see?
  14. Dog Plays "Keep Away" With Objects

    Dog Training Forum
Thanks for the link CP. I like that she's showing how these techniques work with dogs that don't already know the commands.
  15. Trying to teach "speak" - what's going wrong?

    Dog Training Forum
Thanks Tooney. I've been working on "Woof" and "Shush" with Tucker. I can usually get him to bark, by just saying bark/speak/woof, but getting him to understand "Shush" is a whole-nother ball game. I want to add in the hand signal (later, when he's learned the behavior) of putting my finger to...
  16. Not letting your dog eat cat food?

    Dog Training Forum
How did you do that (the No Dogs Allowed areas)?
  17. martingale collars?

    Dog Training Forum
We have a dog in our obedience class (ACD) who slipped her collar three times last class. It wasn't a martingale.
  18. What is the best leash/collar

    Dog Training Forum
How easy is it to put on the dog? That's what I like about the Sensible harness, it's a no-step harness.
  19. What is the best leash/collar

    Dog Training Forum
I'm still looking for the best collar for Tucker. I have a slip lead, a martingale collar/leash combo, a Sensible Harness, a Gentle Leader Head Collar, a flat nylon collar, a 4 ft and a 6 ft leash, as well as (3) 20 ft cotton drag lines. Since Tucker is 95 pounds and still growing, I'm no...
  20. How do I house train my dog?

    Dog Training Forum
I used to think that crate training was cruel (not any more!), but that was before I had my own dog. I was able to house-train Tucker in a matter of weeks. But, more importantly, the crate allows me not to have to keep an eye on him *all* the time, which is tiring. He's 95 pounds trouble.
