With apologies to Gram Parsons - "And l loved him like a father, and I loved him like my friend. And I knew his time could shortly come but I did not know just when."
The toughest dog I've ever known died at home one week ago, without a whimper and after a 2-year battle with an unimaginable assortment of medical issues. The last 20 minutes or so of his life were so horrendous that it was a relief for me and - I'm sure - for him.
An excellent and compassionate vet give him, and us, a couple extra years that were a gift. We had a Saturday appointment to have him euthanized but he died on Thursday with his family - including Esther and Molly - in attendance.
