I have two female dogs they are two weeks apart in age. one is a shih tzu and the other one is a schnauzer/terrier mix. they do not seem to get along. once we get them together they fight. I want to know how to stop this. princess (shih tzu) hardly barks and is very easy going but Angel (schanuzer/terrier mix) is always whinning and barking. if we have her inside the house in the room she whines and barks if we let her out she still does the same. I just need this two dogs to get along because they need to live with each other regardless. I love them and will not get rid of any of this two but need help to get them to get along.

Perhaps read up on some Cesar Milan or just general training stuff. I heard recently that a lot of dogs act out when their "role in the pack" is ambiguous. If they view you or the humans they live with as the alpha, then possibly they'd mellow out an assume their role as the subordinates and not be fighting each other all the time, vying for position of alpha. Take this with a grain of salt, as I'm pretty new to learning to "speak dog". I can tell you though, my family's dog suffered from a lot of the behavioral issues that these theories I've mentioned have been shown to help. Just an idea.

It is a familiar situation and the best thing to not do is just toss the two of them together, each have their own territory. Try taking them on long walks together allowing them to bond. If it doesn't help and they are still fighting - break up the fight quickly and calmly, focusing on the pet who has a higher intensity of irritation though don't shout or yell at them to break it up. Show them that you are the pack leader and it will avoid them looking at each other as competition. Socialization for the both of them is key to a well balanced relationship between the them.
