    Question Curious About Field Spaniels

    Hi everyone!

I'm currently looking into Field Spaniels as potentially being the breed of my next dog. I've done quite a bit of reading on them (literally everything I could find on the internet) and have spoken with various owners. However, I would really love to learn more about them from people who own them or have experience with them!

If you own or have experience with Field Spaniels, please tell me the good, the bad, and the ugly! What would you want a potential owner to understand about the breed before getting one? What do you wish you would have known before you got your Field Spaniel?

I would love to hear any and all advice as I try to figure out if this breed is a good fit for me.

    Thanks all

    Re: Curious About Field Spaniels

Friend of mine has had Springer Spaniels. They are independent (as they are bred to be for hunting) and Obedience is not their "thing" (from watching an owner in Obedience with Brittany Spaniels). Springers (from my friend who has had more than one) can be opinionated and they do not necessarily like everyone who comes in the house.

That is all I have and I am just telling you what I have been told and what I have seen.

    Good Luck!

I had a springer spaniel, she was too young to keep in the shelter on post at 4 or 5wks old so I took her in. She was great, some guy told me they so smart and attentive that I should train her strongly on hand signals before voice.. Very good dog we bonded really tightly intuitive for the time we had with each other growing to maturity. Great in learning and apply OB... able to be off leash and around people and human gatherings.. She did have a thing about alligators that she didn't like. them and she knew when they were around to alert and confront them.. Georgia gators are very land mobile ditch and puddle hoppers so they could show up on wooded trails between water ponds .. Lot of good stuff in the breed if they are like her.

The (very few) people I know of who have Field Spaniels love them. Since they are such an uncommon breed, I'd imagine that you'd have to pretty much network with breed club members to find out more about them.
