    Unable to post photos

I have failed to post photos either as attachments or links to dropbox. The attachments show up as text with black x's. The links to dropbox don't show up at all, either as links or images.

What am I missing? Used to post photos here all the time. Sigh.

You can see the problem illustrated by the dead link above which was supposed to be an uploaded photo.

    Re: Unable to post photos

I have never really figured out pictures. I can't even really understand why other people's signature pictures are so different/much bigger than mine? I don't get why there isn't simply an "upload image" button like every other forum in the world. It's quite ridiculous that we'd have to upload pictures to a third party site in order to place them in posts here, if I'm understanding how it works here. I don't want to jump through so many hoops to include images in my posts. It's a little irritating. /rant over

    Re: Unable to post photos

Basically, the forum wants us to upload to a host (like Photobucket) which is free, unless you need a massive amount of storage.

If the forum hosted all the photos displayed, it would require a massive amount of storage - which would not be free. The forum can be ridiculous or it can be free.

I don't remember if dogforums ever allowed us to upload directly to the forum. If it did, it must have been when the forum was much smaller.

    Re: Unable to post photos

dogforums.com is such a high volume board that it's impractical for them to host photos when free cloud storage is so available. If the system worked (and it used to) you get to post photos in whatever resolution you like and set permissions for copying, downloading, etc. without doing anything different for the board than you would do to share a photo with your sister. I have no problem with that. I just don't understand why I can't post photos using either method.

For the most part this is a very well run board, both technically and in terms of the community. Most of the people here who express opinions and share knowledge have some idea of what they're talking about and very few threads degenerate into name calling. I've been away for a couple of years and things are on the same even keel they were years ago, except recently I can't post photos.

BTW, if a moderator reads this I would really like to see you offer the option of a mobile site or tapatalk. The web layout translates very poorly to smaller screens.

In theory there's still an option to "attach" photos and the ones I uploaded years ago are still visible to me and presumably visible in the threads I put them in. But as I illustrate in my op, that isn't working for me and neither is linking to dropbox or one drive. The photos are in the public folders on both clouds and theoretically visible to anyone with the link. Not happening here.

An example of failed cloud link:

If you can see anything at all beneath "cloud link:" you have better vision than I.

Here's your photo from Photobucket. I don't know why it won't post from DropB ox. I use Google Drive, but not for photo hosting. I'll have to play with it and see what's up.

There is a mobile version of the forum. Usually it loads automatically from a phone or tablet. I don't actually like it much. I prefer the original - even from my phone.

I had to install a Firefox addon called "Phony" to load the mobile site but I actually quite like it! To each his own.

So I opened a photo bucket account and got the same positive result you did. However the photos are much too large and I can't see any way to make them smaller without manually editing them on my pc. Also fwiw, I tried flickr because flickr theoretically let's you link to different size images. None of their several options worked any better than dropbox or onedrive. Google+ doesn't work either.

So to sum up only photo bucket works and the images are too big.

I'd be happy to use the built-in attachment method if it worked.

One of my problems with the mobile version is that it limits moderator options. That's not going to be a problem for more than about three people.

When I get a chance, possibly when I retire in 5-10 years, I'll play with some of the cloud and photo hosting options and see if I can figure out why some work and some don't.

OK, so assuming I need to use photo bucket, any way to scale the photos down other than uploading lower resolution versions?

And any suggestions as to why the attachment method isn't working and what I can do about it?

    Thanks.

    Alrighty.

When you post a link to a photo on the Google Drive, Drop Box or other cloud service, you are just posting a link. You won't see the actual image until you click on the link (using the Link icon in the forum.) See the example above. In post #5 in this thread, you didn't use the attachment icon, you used the image icon and the url that you pasted in wasn't an image file, it was a LINK to an image file.

If you try sharing that link using the image icon on the forum, you'll notice that the link doesn't have an extension (like .jpg) to indicate that it's an image, so it doesn't display anything at all.

Dog forums used to automatically resize images that were too large. For reasons I don't recall, people hated that feature, so it went away, requiring you to size your photos before posting them. If that is a feature that people want, we can ask the administrators to put it back on.

Thank you for the time you spent on this. I'll just use photo bucket for this forum. It's not like it's costing me anything.

I did find the edit button on photo bucket if I need to scale down. And for the folder of 20 photos I wanted to link to I used FastStone photo resizer (FastStone programs are pretty handy) to resize the entire folder at once.

    So I'm good.

    Hi philovance,

Are you having trouble with the attachment function while you are posting or do the attachments not show up once you have posted them?

I have attempted to attach a photo in this message. As you can see there is a link but no photo. If you click on the link it goes to a dead page. However the photo did show up in the preview before I submitted the post.

The picture that is showing is one I uploaded a couple of years ago. Any new photos I upload now do not show.

I see an image for the attached image that you uploaded. Does it not show up for you?

As I said the only image that shows is one I uploaded long ago. The images I tried to upload and attach yesterday do not show. Are you seeing more than one image? The old image is of a brownish dog. The newer photos are of a whitish dog.

    Re: Unable to post photos

So does anyone here successfully use Google Drive to post images here? Or can you ONLY post the LINK to the image? Still trying to figure this out... never thought I was so technology-challenged! Ha I'm just trying to minimize the locations where I store pictures. I have a LOT of pics on Google Drive because they take up so much space on my computer, so I'd prefer to not have to transfer pictures over to photobucket if it can be helped. Though I haven't actually figured out how to do THAT either... meaning transfer a picture from GD to PB without downloading to the computer first.
If your dog doesn't like someone you probably shouldn't either.

I started this thread and I still can't figure out why I can't post photos from any source but Photo Bucket.

You should be able to attach images on desktop without uploading it to a third party site first. Are you using the attachment button highlighted in my screenshot?
