The greatest training obstacle I have encountered (with every dog I work with) is how to build drive (can you create drive?) and motivate. I find that if I can solve the puzzle of what works for the individual dog than everything else is just details.
There are a lot of opinions about this and I want to know how you motivate your dog. Have you ever worked with a seemingly unmotivated dog? How did you overcome that?
That is a good question and something that's been really bothering me lately. If you dont already know, I'm a puppy raiser for guide dogs and I'm currently raising a 10 mth old female lab. She's lacking drive, I'm afraid. She doesnt seem to enjoy going out and working. My last dog would get so excited when he saw we were about to go somewhere and would obviously enjoy our outings. ET grudgingly obliges, but there's no joy and after a very short time, I'm practically dragging her around, to get our errands done. I could be reading her wrong, but I dont think I am. If this is the case, she wont be successful as a guide and all this training and hard work will have been for nothing. I am curious to see if anybody has any input. I've been wanting to talk to my trainer about it, but we dont have classes scheduled anytime soon. I might have to go make a trip down there soon anyhow.
