Potty Matters: Bell Training (is there a best-bell?)

So my puppy's doing really well with the potty training I've been working with her on. Once upon a time ago I had a rottie that as my parents, friends, co-workers, extended family, peers, etc. considered "my life". I was back in college then though and had *a lot* more time to spend training my puppy (and latter doggie); and well she kept me out of trouble, which isn't always easy for a living at home college going type.

One thing I taught my last dog that came in *super* useful was to ring a bell on the door when she had to go to the bathroom. Given that when my new puppy has to go during times I'm not anticipating it she's started to whimper at the door, it's about time I start introducing a bell into our equation so she learns to ring the bell and I can ensure I know the difference between "whimpering" because she feels like it and needing the door opened so she can get outside to take care of certain matters she and I would rather her not do indoors.

Anyway, I'm thinking no later than this weekend I'll purchase a bell to hang on the door for her use. I went to the pet-shops last night and looked around but didn't see any dog specific bells for this purpose -- which sort of surprised me considering I had my last dog about 13 years ago and, well, the method wasn't new then...you'd think someone would do some testing where they came up with the "perfect dog bell" by now...

So, is there any type, ring, jingle, size, etc. that anyone has found works better than others for the canine kinds? If I recall correctly when I trained my last dog to use the bell I raided my parents Christmas stuff to find a bell in there, having long since moved from my parents home =P it just isn't an option again.

Thanks for anyone who knows what the pups like best!

    Cheers,

    Cam

I really don't think it matters. My dog rings a bell that I bought for something like 30 cents at a craft store, and stuck to the door knob with a zip tie. I would think the only necessary specs would be that she can reach it, and you can hear it.

We like Poochie Bells here. You can get them online. I have a friend that uses a bell like they sometimes have on counters at businesses. They keep it on the floor by the door and the dog steps on it to make it ring. Any bell should do as long as the dog can easily work it and it is loud enough for you to hear from another part of the house.

I attached a small wind chime to the door frame of the door we use to let the dog out. She hits the wind chime with her nose to let us know. She learned how to use it in a few days, as a 5 month old pup, and it sounds pretty. If she really needs to go out, and I'm taking too long to get to the door, she will really make those chimes noisy!
