    Playing Chase Instead of Fetch

When we are in the backyard I will attempt to play fetch with PC. When I have a reward he's awesome at playing fetch. When I don't have a reward, however, he wants me to chase him and he will NOT come to me. I think we've confused him somehow because in the past we could play chase with him and it was a fun way to exercise us both. And even now I will sometimes chase him with the toy because it's fun. Whoever has the toy is chased whether it's me or PC. The only time he won't come is when we play fetch and don't have any rewards. :/ I screwed up. How do I fix this? Lately I've been ignoring him when he won't come back. It's not a serious problem. I just wanna play fetch..

    Several suggestions:

Teach your dog to play tug so that coming back to you with an object is fun.

Stop taking the object when he comes back, and instead play with the dog.

Have many of the same object so you can play fetch without taking what he has.

Play with the dog on a long line so you can help him return to you when you ask him to.

If you want the dog to come towards you, move away from him instead of towards him.

Teach the dog to come right up to you to let you take his collar to get a reward.

    Good luck.

Redyre, how did I not think of any of those (besides playing tug)? Lol, thank you so much.

Great suggestions! I've been working on this with Jackson too. He's good at fetch inside but once outside... he just likes to run!

    Thanks for the tips!
