Crate bladder control vs. out of crate bladder control (5 month pup)

My pup, Duncan, is doing exceptionally well with his crate training and has had zero accidents in his crate including over night and during the day while I work. However when he is out and about and we I watch him inside he often goes by the door, sits, then will quickly relieve himself at times (usually only partial). He always goes by the door so I think he understands well enough he needs to go outside, but it's like as soon as the urge hits him when he's not in the crate he has to relieve himself. Is this fairly normal for his age? Or should I be doing something different with his training. I always praise and give training treats when he goes out, FYI.

    Thanks for any insight!

It's normal. He's sleeping a lot in his crate and doesn't have access to water (probably) and can't move around. Think how long you can hold it when you're napping or asleep as opposed to hold long you can go without peeing during the day. Same thing.

Yeah, same thing CptJack said. They don't really have great control of their bladders until their over 6 months old. They sometimes only know they have to go a few seconds before they are going. Take your pup out more often before he has to signal you, and that should fix your problem.
