Number of days for Pain/discomfort after spaying

    Hi,
My 8 year old german shepherd was spayed Mar 17th, but is still having some pain/discomfort 7 days later like whimpering, some restlessness, trying to scratch the incision, etc.
Otherwise, she is doing fine--eating, pooping, etc.

I did take her in to the vet to check her out, and they could not find anything wrong and suggested waiting for a couple more days.

I was wondering what the experience has been for other owners of older dogs that have been spayed?

    Thanks,
    Arun

Did she get any pain medication after her surgery?

Yes. Vet prescribed carprofen for 5 days, but she still is in some slight discomfort 8 days after the surgery. Otherwise she seems in good health. So was wondering if some older dogs just take a bit longer to heal/be pain free....

I wonder if it's because of her age? I assume older dogs would take longer to heal.

We had our dog spayed at around 7 months. She was groggy the first night, but by the second day we really couldn't tell she had had surgery at all, she was back to her usual self.

It could very well be that older dogs take longer to heal. Tessa was like Jenn's dog - sleepy the first night, but fed up with being confined by the second night.

If she is still having discomfort, I don't think its out of line to ask the vet for additional pain relief. Tessa got 10 days worth after her spay, and a spay is major abdominal surgery.

It has been more than 2 weeks. How is the pain?
