My dog spent some time in the hospital and has now developed a huge, deep sore on her

My dog was in the hospital for IBD for a week. When I picked her up I noticed an awful place on her back. It has been a week and the sore isn't any better. The vet says they don't know what could have caused it. It was originally scabbed over, but the vet said to keep neosporin on it and keep it bandaged. The scab fell off so my dog now has a huge open hole on her back! You can almost see her rib bones it is so deep. Does anyone know what this might be??

Did the wound look like that when the vet saw it? If you are not happy with what this vet is telling you, go to a different vet. You have the right to take your dog somewhere else for a 2nd opinion. It looks like it needs to be kept bandaged for awhile till more healing takes place.
I would try therapy but the couch was full!

Did the vet administer any injections there or did you use anything topical (flea medication, etc) around that spot? To me it looks as if she had a reaction to something. I'm surprised the vet isn't more concerned. I would call him back and ask him to re-examine her or even get a second opinion at a different vet.

Oh my god, that's horrible. It looks like it needs to be sewn up or have skin grafted (though I'm not a vet). I don't know what could cause this, but if it were me I would demand that the vet provide treatment immediately, gratis. Skin doesn't just... disappear. Something happened while your dog was under veterinary care, and they need to take responsibility and fix it.

How many centimeters across is it? Is she on antibiotics or any other medicine?

Absolutely have the vet treat this or find another vet who will. IMO ...That has to be sore and could become infected hanging open like that. I would believe a dog should at least have an antibiotic for an open wound.

Is it possible she was laying on that spot? You say back but if it's more her side or somewhere she'd have been putting pressure on it, then it may be a pressure sore. AKA a bed sore.

When I first saw 'in hospital for a week' and then saw it that was my thought. Worked in long term care enough to know how fast they can happen. If there's pressure on a spot for long enough with no blood flow the skin starts to die and if it continues the tissue underneath also dies.

You should check with the vet and ask, and they should be treating it or helping you treat it.

Well, the vet did say keep Neosporin and bandages on it...And I agree - sounds like it could be a pressure sore. And if that really is all it is, it should heal, provided you keep it clean and bandaged with the antibiotics.

Doesn't sound like a pressure sore to me, especially if it is on her back.
