Thread: I have a Horse.

Accidentally.

She was running loose on the highway and in our yard this morning.



After nearly being hit twice crossing the highway we managed to move her farther from the road, while we were trying to catch her.





4 hours, one rope burnt hand, one really bad sunburn, and one bruised hip later she's in my yard.


I'm estimating her at 13 hh maybe 13.2hh.

NOW, that she's in the yard, she's following me everywhere. If I leave she runs to where she can see me, when I come back she runs to watch me come.

If I run in the yard she runs behind. I feel like the pied piper.

Lucky thing I still remember how to make a rope halter.

She's either been rubbing, or she has a little bit of rain scald.

She's let me pick up all four feet and check her everywhere.



I've looked her over from head to toe, leaned on her back, she'll back for me, I don't even have a hoof pick, so I left her feet alone. They look well cared for though.







I wonder how long it'll take someone to come looking for her. I checked her mouth. She's less than seven yo. I couldn't even find one tick.

WOW- what a coincidence Chrissy- you were looking for a horse and one ends up in your yard?? Wow-you saved her...she's gorgeous!! Do horses run free there or u htink she broke free? You think someone will claim her??

Ok slight exaggeration. At her withers, she comes to my chest. That puts her at approx, 4 ft tall on the back. She's very sweet, though. I just went back and checked on her and even though it's dark, and she's loose, she let me walk up to her, and rub her shoulder and face. If she were only bigger. My feet would be past her knees if I was sitting on her.

If nobody comes to claim her, she'll be a good pasture mate for whatever horse I do get. I can't see someone not out there looking for her though. Somebody's been looking after her and training her.

Chrissy, glad to see you were able to get her. That could have been really dangerous with her on the road.

She looks really young, like a yearling(especially with that short tail). Might explain her funky conformation and height right now. I agree, feet look like they were cared for. I also would agree with rain scald on the face.

Did you take a look at that cut on her right hind? Can't see it real well from the pictures.

Yeah I looked at the cuts. They look like they're healing. No real sore just fresh pink skin. Most people here tie their horses out by a rope around the pastern. Safe eh?

We've had two horses hit right in front of the restaurant. Two different times. I just could NOT leave her running loose without trying to catch her.


I had given up as she's extremely rope wise. She decided to take a rest and we just started tying a corral around her using the trees. Tying the last knot, she came up and asked for some lovin' then I had Tony pass me a rope from behind and she just let me slide it over her neck and tie a halter.
After all that? Easy as pie. Arrrrgh. hehe.

I'd really like to get in and see what her feet look like. I wonder what I could use as a makeshift pick.

I agree she looks well cared for and looks like a yearling to me. Hopefully she has a good home somewhere out there!

I can't tell if it is yearling baby pudge, or worms...however, if you do keep this cutie, I would worm her. I would try small doses over about a week and a half though(I would be concerned about impaction colic). Too bad she didn't decide to show up when you vet drove all that way!

I also like the idea of a screwdriver, anything will do. Unless something is wrong with her feet, she wont feel it. Even a hammer(the side where you pull nails from) would work.

Make sure you take more pictures of this girl, I have a feeling she will be doing a lot of growing the next few years. You never know, she could end up being a perfect size for you

I saw a mini-horse at my sister's horse barn. Tripped me out!

Ok, LOL RC and Silly, Great minds think alike. I used a short Phillips.(I had an allen wrench in reserve in case the Phillips didn't work) Her feet are now clean and she's currently assisting in maintaining the cabana yards. She was very good about letting me clean out her feet. They look ok. I think she's been kept on soft ground.

My shower felt sooooooo good last night. And now I smell like horse again. I love it. LOL I'm surrounded by the pure essence of horse. Mmmmmmmm. Nirvana.

ETA: I think you all are right. She's young. Very curious, she keeps trying to pull things out of my pockets.(camera, cig pack) She also likes to stand behind me and nibble on my shirt and pull on my back pockets. A real lover. Who ever had her wasn't treating her rough. I'm expecting someone to show in the next few days.

I was wondering if anyone knows about citrus leaves being bad/good for horses. She's testing everything, citrus among them.

Sounds like she is fitting in great. Don't you love the horse smell? I came home from brunch and saw my two sleeping together outside. Nothing like seeing the equines enjoy some sun time.

I am not 100% sure about the Citrus leaves. Do you have a vet you could call and ask?

Do you have any Oats or Hay you could feed her? I imagine she is hungry for more substance.

She sounds like Tex at the same age. He was somewhat mouthy. He has since grown out of it, but it was definitely during his 'sponge' stage when he was learning about the world.

I think she needs some extra too. I don't have any hay. I was thinking about how to go about giving her some extras. The only thing I can think of right now is cutting some grass and throwing it in the yard, I worry about bloat though. Of all the times for a horse to show up it WOULD be while Juan is gone. He'll be back Tues. I have rolled oats? WDYT?

It's that, or, tie her out. Which I don't really want to do.

I could make her a mash with carrots and oats. Molasses? I'm so out of practice.

Chrissy, maybe you could make her a mash using the oats and some molasses and bananas.

Anyone nearby that might have some grain or a couple of flakes of hay you could buy?

I tried my vet but they're not answering.

BANANAS! I never thought of that. Horses here don't like carrots.

Hardly anyone here uses hay. They just started making hay a couple years ago. Everyone just ties them out to eat grass.

I wouldn't feed any oats or grass or anything. Cut grass is especially dangerous because if you cut it with the mower it usually ends up containing oil and causes impaction colic. But if she's not used to getting oats or grass etc then that could cause her to colic or founder. I would just get some hay from somewhere and feed her that.

Have you put any found ads up anywhere?
