I'm really depressed right now :(

Long story short, my brother in law in a preacher in our local church and he has been for quite a few years now. Up until now he's basically been assisting our local pastor and has preached here and there as well. He recently decided that he wants to be a full time evangelist - truck, trailor, living out a of a suitcase, the whole nine yards. Now, if it was just him leaving, I wouldn't care. I'd be a little thrilled TBH. Sadly, he has decided that if he's going to be on the road all year long that his family should come with him. Why he would want that is beyond me, but whatever. Anyway, this means that come June 1, my sister and both of my nieces will be gone and I will likely not see them again until the holidays. My sister I can live without, but those two little girls are kind of the center of my world. They're here for another two weeks or so, but I already miss them so much. I don't know what I'm going to do when they're gone. They're the only thing in my little world that can always make me smile. Any ideas on how to cope with this? They are literally all I've got going on in my life.

Hulk, I am sorry. I can totally understand where you are coming from. Children bring a light into our lives. I don't know if you know that (I likely blabbed it) but I wanted 10 kids of my own. Turned out I couldn't have any. I had Cancer and couldn't have any. Anyhoo, I have nephews and they too are my world. When My sister got a divorce and now has to let the X take the boys a few days a week, it really cut into how much I could see them. Months go by now and I can't see them and it is so hard.

I wonder if you might enjoy being a "big brother" or something like that? There are so many children that would benefit from some adult interaction. Someone who would be kind to them, help them with homework, show interest in them. Just a thought. If you think of any other good ideas that I have overlooked. Share them with me, would you?

Can you try to go visit them sometimes? Kind of a "meet me in the middle" type of solution. I know it wouldn't be as often as you see them now, but at least it might help. And what about seeing them over the internet? Video chat, email, phone calls?

I really like Inga's suggestion of the big brother thing, there really are a lot of kids who need that.

Also on the same note, I'm not sure if you're willing to do this or anything, but when all the grandkids left my grandmothers house a long time ago, she started being a foster parent for children. She really enjoyed having them around.

I don't know if I'm cut out for the Big Brother thing. Honestly, I don't get along with kids in general and am not a big fan of them. These kids are the exception. I guess because they're related. Not sure. I don't think I would qualify as a foster parent. I'm a single guy to begin with. Like I said, I'm not a kid person. I'm one of those people who never wants to have kids.

I did buy an iPod this morning that has a front facing camera. Gonna try and see if I can get it to work for video chatting and will give it to them. I miss them already.

    I'm sorry Hulk.
Maybe they could come for long visits at your house? Living in a trailer sounds fun and adventurous, but I can tell you from personal experience (did it for almost 2 years with my 2 daughters), it gets real old, real fast, for the kids. Mine probably would've jumped at the chance to go visit their favorite uncle for a few weeks here and there to break up the monotony of trailer-living.

What about your dogs? They should give you something to smile and be happy about.

I don't want to have my own kids, either, but I do enjoy working with them. The deal is that it's other people's kids who are irritating, but when you spend a lot of time with a particular kid, they become yours, in a sense. Just like your nieces. Not yours, exactly, but yours enough so that they are no longer irritating. Perhaps, before you jumped into a committment like a Big Brother program, you could do something that required less time and effort, just to make sure you enjoyed it. You could get involved in the local library or middle school's after-school tutoring program or assist in a Sunday school class a couple times a month. If that works out, you could go for something bigger, like the Big Brother program. When I'm done with grad school and have a life again, I'm going to be a court appointed child advocate.

If not kids, then something else to fill your time. Pick up a new hobby. Keeps your mind off being sad.

My dogs are animals, not people. It's not the same.

I'm really one of those people who, in general, does not get along with the little humans. I find them annoying. Except for my nieces. They're cute. Other people's kids tend to annoy me.

Will they have a computer with them? Get them a web cam and teach them how to SKYPE (sp?). Have them call you every day before they go to bed or every time they have something exciting happen.

Make sure they know your home address. Give them several envelopes with stamps to send you drawings and such with.

Make them both a lap desk with paper, pencils, crayons, etc. to make you stuff with.

Buy them a cheap pay as you go phone to use to call you with.

    Hugs!

    Kim
