i have nothing against using, say, deer or elk as long as the "hunter" uses all of the animal he hunts (i have nothing against hunting as it helps to keep the animals from getting over populated and starving, since we have pretty much screwed up the natural order of things) but to raise mink or anything for the sole purpose of making fur anything i think is wrong......an i won't wear any of that stuff myself (altho a friends dad had made me some rabbit fur lined gloves yrs ago; they raised rabbits for meat and he used/sold the furs, but that's along the same lines as the hunter)

As far as I know, fur is way out of style anyway... I'd never wear it regardless, although I also don't have any problems with people using the fur from hunted animals. After all, if it's not used, it will go to waste and after the animal has been killed, that would be a shame...

    To play Devil's Advocate :

We farm raise cows to have beef, milk, cheese, and leather.

We farm raise pigs for bacon, sausage, and other pork products.

What is the difference in raising a chinchilla for fur, and raising a cow for leather?

I would never wear fur, myself. However, food, shelter, and clothing are necessities of the human condition.

We need food and shelter of course but, I just don't like to see people wear fur.

when you use the cow hide and eat the meat you are utilizing the majority of the animal......but how many people eat the chinchilla/mink/stoat/whatever?....all that gets used is the fur.....as i said in my previous post...i have no problem w/ using furs/hides if the rest of the animal is used as well....as much as possible, that is....even our ancestors didn't waste the animal.....

To ilovemychihuahua: Is it possible that the people you would like to kill for wearing fur coats are simply wearing faux fur? These days real fur is extremely expensive and very hard to find, most people do not wear real fur.
Think about this before you go killing or maiming anyone, maybe no animals have died for their coat after all : D

I think it's cruel to animals killing them and using them for human food and to keep us warm!

Why can't everyone be a vegetarian?

Animals are made to satisfy the human food-wise so we would not go hungry. But that doesn't mean that animals are here to skin just for their fur. It is cruel just to use them as coats, but it isn't cruel to use them as food nessessarily.

because man, just like canines, felines, and all the other carnivores out there are meant to be omnivores and it's not healthy to eat just veggies......just as it's not healthy to eat just meat......the body doesn't get the nutrients it needs eating just one or the other....

and, ilovemychihuahua, i believe it's just as cruel to kill and eat only the meat as it is to kill and use only the fur.....the whole animal should be utilized as much as possible.....

I must say, I have the more gorgeous lynx coat. It's soft, very warm and machine washable!
Thank God it's fake! I'd never wear real fur. I don't know why people have to when there are great synthetics out there.

Good piont. To the people in the world who love fur coats like Cruela DeVille: pick out the fakes! They are probably more stable than real ones anyway.

    Hrmmm...

To answer your query with another: have you ever seen a chinchilla? They're tiny. It would ammount to raising squirrels on farms for meat. I cannot imagine how many it would take to make a meal, or even whether the meat would be viable.

I would much rather someone buy a fur coat made from farm raised animals like chinchilla and rabbits (as sad as it is ) then someone to go out and kill wild mink, for example, or something more endangered, such as a leopard, tiger, or wild fox.

On another note, I do not think that wearing fur is any more barbaric then wearing leather. Regardless of how you spin it, you're still wearing the skin of another being. If the "cruelty" is what you're worried about, I'd honeslty be more concerned with how we treat domesticated beasts, like our cows and pigs.

They are totally dependent on people for their well being (unlike a wild animal that can feed itself and clean itself), and sometimes it is amazing how farmers who mass produce dairy, or meat will treat their animals. If you wonder about why different kinds of steak cost differently, it basically what is done to the cow before they slaughter it.

There are many types of cruelty in the world, both towards animals and people. I think its great you all are concerned about fur, but where animals are concerned, that's only the tip of the ice berg.

JFI...the leather used in shoes, boots, etc is usually from the cattle slaughtered for consumption.....w/ the exception, of course, those made from more expensive (sometimes illegal) leathers.....this is where the WHOLE animal is being used.....most slaughter houses even have people that use the bone, hooves, etc....

Snowshoe, i agree that there are more, shall we say, important cruelty issues that should be addressed.....not only amongst our animals, both domestic and wild, but w/ our people, too.....if man doesn't change his ways we will be our own undoing and things will cease to be......

    Fur coats are wrong

Fur coats are a luxury/status symbol. Shoes, food, etc. are necessities. I agree that the way animals are treated is inhumane. I haven't eaten veal for years after I saw a documentary on how the animals are kept. Now, I've added pork to my list of nonos since I saw how the pigs are confined in order to have "tender" meat. These are the things we should be dealing with. I eat chicken & fish and, I know, people will say they are abused too. But I do have to eat something besides vegetables. The problem is I don't have recipes for vegetarian food. Most of my meals are vegetables & pasta.

What can we do to improve conditions for cattle, pigs, etc.?
