HELP! Dog won't sleep through night

Our 7 month old Shi-Poo won't sleep through the night! At around 3am or 4am he starts barking non-stop!! We put him in his crate at night since he is not 100% house broken yet. We have tried everything! He will NOT eat in his crate..so, if we give him a treat he saves it and eats it when he comes out. We've tried a Kong toy with peanut butter, but he just leaves it there until he comes out. We leave him toys, chew toys, etc. in the crate, but nothing works! We've tried leaving a light on for him, having a radio on, covering the crate. He is not barking because he has to go to the bath room, because if I take him out he does not go to the bathroom right away..I think he just wants to come out and play! Any advice??

I'm not an expert so take my advice with a grain of salt but here's my thoughts on it:

1rst. Are you sure he doesn't have to go to the bathroom? My dog can have to go to the bathroom and she'll still be picky about where and take a while to go (We've had her on rough waters on the boat for 10 hours straight and then when she comes off the boat she'll be so distracted it will take her a while to realize, oh yeah, I have to pee. And I don't believe she doesn't have to pee after holding it for 10 hours on a boat that's been rocking a lot).

2nd: If you are sure she doesn't have to pee, this will be hard, but I'd say ignore her entirely (I know that will be hard). She's probably learned that you come out when she barks. I'm sure some one else has even better ideas on how to emphasize to her that barking doesn't get her what she wants. Like maybe waiting til she quiets down for a few seconds and then coming out, maybe give her a treat, and then leave? And maybe starting to increase the amount of time she has to wait before you come out. And then maybe eventually just not coming out and seeing if she's improved?

3rd. Try to get her tired before you go to bed. Do a lot of playing and maybe training exercises. Don't give her a chance to lie around a lot.

How much and of what type of exercise is she getting each day?

Re: HELP! Dog won't sleep through night

Just thought of one more thing. My dog has a very good habit of waiting for me to be ready to let her out before she gets up and excited int he morning (she's not as reliable on not getting restless once I'm up but she does wait for me to wake up before getting excited about anything) . She *never* wakes me up and usually will sleep until I wake up, or at least quietly lay in her bed (unless she has to go to the bathroom which is very rare, usually when she's having diarrhea issues). Though she knows when I wake up and am trying not to get out of bed cause sometimes when I'm pretty much awake but trying to go back to bed she'll start getting restless ("Hey, mom, I know you're up, when are you going to let me out?") but if I do nothing she'll go lie down again.

But, I think she picked this up cause I never greet her right when I get up. I let my alarm (radio/tv) wake me up, brush my teeth, and then I actually will address her, greet her, let her outside to pee (I did this cause I wanted her to stay settled down til I was ready to let her out). So she doesn't have the expectation of me waking up means she is doing something (though after my teeth are brushed all bets are off. Or if I leave my bedroom door open as I usually leave her in my room til I'm ready to let her out, so if I let her out she expects stuff to happen).

Maybe also trying when you wake up in the morning doing some routine stuff before you even greet your dog?
