    How long after neutering?

I was wondering how long after neutering do the hormones stay in the dog's system?

Brom is getting neutered in 2 weeks. Brom's brother, Ollie, lives with friends of ours and he was neutered at the beginning of May. The boys were good together until they "matured". Ollie began humping EVERYTHING around the beginning of April and the last time the boys were together Ollie decided that he would hump Brom. Brom was not a fan.

I am just wondering if after they are both neutered we can work on their relationship again? We would like to do things together over the summer (camping and such) but we won't be able to do it if the boys don't get along.

My friend said that her vet told her it takes 6 weeks for the hormones to leave a bunny after it is neutered. Is it the same for dogs?

How do you suggest we begin working on their relationship? I was thinking leashed walks together. Other than that I am not sure. I won't feel comfortable with them being off leash together until I am sure they are friends. Can we even get them to be friends again?

    Thanks!

humping isnt per se a hormone thing

more often than not its a matter of being overstimulated.(in a general way.)

neutered or not, you can work on it.

    Re: How long after neutering?

It is funny, Brom has been humping Iorek since he came home. Ollie didn't hump at all until he was about 8-9 months old. He would hump their cats and even them. Brom only humps Iorek and I am pretty sure it is just play. They take turns - not like it is all the time and I always interrupt them and redirect them.

As far as I can tell Ollie is not exercised a whole lot. They don't take take him for many walks and he hardly gets out for a run. Maybe it is frustration at that?

Brom was not happy at all when Ollie humped him but he seems ok when Iorek does it. Maybe it just because Iorek is his buddy and Ollie is just a friend that he saw occasionally.

How can we work on the relationship?

put some more structure into it.

stop allowing free play between the two for now. do some fetch/tug/etc type games, take leash walks together, do group training sessions..

and with the group training..work on some kind of "leave it" type cue in regards to each other...so that when you do allow free play again...you can cut it off with a word and give them time to calm down

give them a few months with only structured interaction. then throw in a random say 5 minute free play..if they do well with that...have some more structured time and then do 10 minutes. always supervising so that you can cut off any undesirable behavior before it turns into an argument.
